“I would love that,” I say. At least I think it was me. My lips moved and words came out, but surely, I couldn’t have betrayed myself like that.

“Great.” He looks relieved. “How’s tonight?”

“Tonight?”

“Too soon?”

“No. Tonight is great. That works.” And there I go again.

“Pick you up at seven?”

“Yeah. Okay. Sure.”

“Awesome.” His smile widens. “Okay, I’ll see you tonight. And, Zach, I’m sure I’ll see you soon. I have to go. Okay, see you tonight.” And with that, he’s gone.

My head might be spinning just a bit.

“Go ahead, say it,” Zach says.

“Say what?”

“I’m waiting for a ‘you are right, Zach, I’m so sorry I doubted you’kind of statement to come from your lips.”

“No way. This is an apology dinner. You heard him.”

“When did you get so stupid?”

“Thanks a lot, jerk.”

“I’m serious. You are being so lame about this guy it’s like I don’t even know you.”

“He’s my sister’s ex—”

“Blah, blah, sister, blah blah—”

“—fiancé.”

“How long will that be your excuse?”

“It’s not an excuse, it’s a reason.”

“Tomato tomahto.”

“You are so frustrating.Shut up!If you weren’t my best friend I think I’d hate you.”

“Ditto.” He studies his nails, a bland look on his face. Zach is much better at being a bitch than I am.

“Fine,” I say.

“Fine.”

We sit there a moment. Me glaring at him, and him ignoring me.

“Fine,” I say. “What do I wear?”

“Now you’re talking. You up for some shopping?”

I roll my eyes and shake my head. “Sure, what the hell.” I’m not that annoyed though. Let’s face it. Regardless of the reason why it happened, I’m going out with Mason Cartwright tonight. I’m pretty sure I’ve been dreaming about this for months. AshLynn be damned. I like this guy. It’s possible he likes me. I’m going to roll with it.
