Zach moves in and hugs my mom thanking her for producing such aneasy on the eyes, strapping young man.Making us all laugh and taking the attention off Willow, which I’m sure is his intent.

“All good things, dear. I assure you.” My mom smiles at Willow. “What brought you two here today?”

“Oh . . . uh,” Willow starts.

“I’m a writer,” Zach interjects. “So I consider it to be my civic duty to patronize all local bookstores. I’ve already found so many books I want to buy.”

“Well, you just keep right on looking then,” Mom half jokes.

“We should probably get going soon, unfortunately,” Willow says. My stomach bottoms out. I don’t want her to go. Not yet. Though if she’s leaving it probably means she wants nothing to do with me.

“Why?” Zach asks.

“I thought you had to go,” Willow says, bugging her eyes at him.

“I don’t have anywhere to be. We can spend the entire afternoon here as far as I’m concerned.”

Willow turns red. I hate that she wants so little to do with me that she’d make up excuses for leaving.

Think about it. You were engaged to her sister, then you dumped her sister, bailed without saying goodbye, and took off for six months.

I’m probably right. She wants nothing to do with me and I can’t say that I blame her.
