“Exactly.”
“But you love her,” I say.
“Can’t fucking live without her, E. My world starts and ends with her.”
“That’s cheesy as fuck.”
“I know. But I’m telling you, when you fall in love, you’ll feel it, I swear. You are probably feeling it now and you just don’t realize it. Because why the hell else would you be sitting outside a restaurant stalking your roommate on her date.”
“She’s not my roommate,” I argue.
“She rents a room from you?”
“She doesn’t pay rent.”
“Even worse.”
“What does she see in this douche?” I change the subject. I have no desire to dwell on my feelings toward Sadie for any length of time. Especially not when Brad is suggesting that I’m in love. “Did I tell you he’s wearing corduroy pants?”
“How can you tell?”
“It just so happened that he walked past me on the sidewalk when he was heading to the restaurant to meet Sadie. I heard the motherfucker from half a block away.”
Brad laughs.
“It’s not funny, man. I can’t let corduroy pants guy show me up. I’ll never be able to look at myself in the mirror again.”
“How long are you going to watch them?” he asks me.
“Until they leave.”
“Jesus Christ, E. That could be hours.”
“Let’s hope not.”
“Why until they leave?”
“Because then I’ll know, based on how long she takes to get home, what she did after. Or who she did.”
“But don’t you think it’s smart for her to get some additional experience in the dating arena? I mean she has only dated one guy.”
“Lexie barely dated at all and look at her and Cole.”
“Is that what you want, something like what Lexie and Cole have?”
“Well, yeah, kind of. Something like what all of you have. It’s nice, man. And you’re happy. You are all fucking happy. Even with fucking the same chick night after night.”
“That’s actually one of the best parts,” Brad says.
“I’m a fucking idiot, man.”
“Yeah, but you can rally. You got this. You didn’t minor in women’s studies for nothing.”
“Funny,” I say. Even though it’s true. I minored in women’s studies because I wanted to understand women better. That’s not exactly how it worked.
“You said things have been tense between you guys at home, right?”
“Yeah.”
