I get to the gate with time to spare. They aren’t even boarding for another fifteen minutes. I find a seat near the gate we’ll be leaving from and check the news on my phone.

Attention passengers on flight four fifty-one San Soloman to Amarillo, Texas. Your flight has been delayed due to weather. I’m afraid the fog is preventing us from taking off. We will update you on a take-off time as soon as we have one. If you have a connecting flight in . . .

I tune the announcer out after hearing what I need to.

Shit.

I’m not good with waiting. I text Brad, knowing he may not be able to respond.

ME: Ducking flight delayed.

ME: Ducking

ME: Fucking. Duck. Cant text w other hend

ME: hand

BRAD: Did the ducks fly into the engine?

ME: U r not funny

BRAD: Oh, but I am. Go to the bar, get a drink.

ME: just gt coffee

BRAD: Have them make it an Irish.

ME: pills

BRAD: Oh, that’s right.

ME: need clear head

ME: Losing never

ME: nerve

BRAD: You got this, man. Just because you’re all busted up and you can’t use your arm and she told you not to call her again, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go.

ME: Thx

BRAD: Here to help.

He puts a fucking smiley face emoji in his text.

What a douche.

He’s a douche that’s right though. I need to suck it up and stay at the ready. I will get my girl, and nothing is going to stop me. Not a little fog, not a broken arm, and not a text message that could really be interpreted as ambiguous. Her feelings can’t have changed over the last few weeks. If they have, they weren’t true to begin with. This is just her succumbing to the fear that her mother has instilled in her.

I hope.

Unless it’s not.

I stand and head to the windows and watch the fog, drinking my coffee.

Is this crazy? Flying off to Texas to chase after a girl I’ve only known a short while just because I think she’s the one.

Yes.
