“Okay, okay, so how did it end?” Tenley asks, gasping for air.

“Then, when the server brings back the to-go container he says, and I quote, ‘You know, Sadie, I was really looking forward to tonight. But I have to tell you, I’m not sure we have anything in common. So, I’m going to go before I have too much more time invested.’”

“Shut the fuck up!”

“Totally serious. It gets better.”

“There’s no way you can top that.”

“When he stood up to leave, he said that since he’d only ordered water, he wouldn’t be leaving anything for the bill.”

Tenley falls into hysterics again. I laugh again with her.

“Where do you find these guys?”

“I know! The server, she was really nice by the way, said she’d never seen anything so insane before. She got the manager to comp the salad, my perfectly prepared six-ounce filet I ordered for my meal and my drinks. On top of all that, they ordered me an Uber.”

“God love California!”

“Right? Ten, I gotta say, it was the craziest fucking night I’ve ever had.”

“Okay, okay. Enough about crazy. What about hunky firefighter?”

“Ethan? He left me a note demanding I go on a date with him Friday night.”

“Demanding?” she asks, eyebrows raised.

“Yep.”

“That’s what I’m talking about. I love this man already.”

I sigh. Then surprise myself by saying, “Me too.”

“I knew you couldn’t do no strings.”

“I haven’t slept with him.”

“Don’t matter. You’re screwed.”

“I know. I think I like him.”

“Iknowyou like him.”

“What do I do, Ten?”

“The only thing you can do.” She pauses. I try to catch her eye on the screen, always harder than it seems. “You’ll just have to go on the date Friday night, then after you get home, you fuck that man until you can’t fuck no more.”

I smile. “Love you, Tenley.”

“Love you, Sadie-Soo.” She blows me a kiss.

“Talk later?” I ask.

“Tenley, out.” She disconnects the video feed. I lay on my bed laughing to myself about the date. And feeling so totally grateful to have Tenley in my life.
