Chapter 23
Sadie
The server brings us our second margarita since I averted death by being chopped in half by a faulty window.
“So, tell me why you’re avoiding Ethan?” Kat asks.
“I’m notavoidinghim.”
“What would you call it?”
“Everything is so intense when I’m with him. It’s just so . . .”
“Awesome? Invigorating? Sexy?”
“Scary.”
“Oh, you’re one of those,” she says.
“One of what?”
“I used to be one of you. Afraid of being happy, of having everything I wanted.”
“That’s not me.”
“Of course, it is.” She takes a long pull on the straw in her margarita, making slurping sounds once the glass is empty. “You took until the last possible second to extricate yourself from a situation you knew the entire time wasn’t right. You turn around, like almost immediately, and find a guy that is right, so you run from that too.”
“I . . . look, I haven’t dated. So, how do I know that Ethan is what I want?”
“How’d you know the other guywasn’t?” She sits back in her seat and tries to tuck her hair behind her ears, but it’s too short. She’d mentioned it was just growing out after losing it during chemo treatments. I think the look is adorable, but Kat says it’s still too short. It’s very reminiscent of a pixie cut.
“It was . . . I just . . . it was a feeling.” I want to ask her about what my mom said. But I’m afraid my mom is right. I’m also afraid my mom is wrong. “Let me ask you this,” I start.
“Hang on, I have a feeling we need another round for this.” Kat orders another drink and I wait until the server brings it to start my story.
“Okay, you know that song by the Beatles—the one that says never make a pretty woman your wife?”
“Yeah,”
“Well, my mom says you should take that to heart with men too. Not to marry someone that is too attractive because you’ll just end up heartbroken. And have you seen Ethan? He’s insanely good looking. Like way out of my league—”
“Hold up.” She puts her palm up to stop me from talking. “Out of your league. Are you fucking crazy? There is no way he is out of your league unless you mean that you are way hotter than him. I mean, I love E like a brother, and I’ll agree that he’s attractive, but you are way hotter than him if put to a comparison.”
“I don’t know.”
“Okay, let me ask you this, do you think me, Remi and Lexie will be heartbroken?”
“God no, I’ve seen the way your husbands look at you.”
“Exactly, and Brad and I aren’t married.”
“You aren’t?”
“No, we keep meaning to do it. It just hasn’t happened yet. But, for sure, that man is stuck with me for life. Well, my life anyway. And it works like it is. We know we are together, I’m wearing his ring, so it’s all good. You know?”
“Okay, well—”
“Well, nothing. My point being either you think me and my girls are all going to be heartbroken, or you think our men aren’t hot?”
