“Ohmigod! Ethan, my arm! Thank you!”

“Hang on, settle down, we still need to see about this window. It should just . . .” He pulls the window up a little, it moves easily. “That’s what I thought,” he says. “The arm was the problem. Hold both your arms above your head.”

I do as he says and within a matter of seconds, he has the window up over my head and I am free.

“Ohmigod! Ohmigod! You did it! I’m free! Ethan, thank you so much!!” I reach out and hug him without thinking. It’s awkward at best since he is still holding the window in his hands. Which, I’m hoping is the only reason why he doesn’t hug me back. I pull the helmet and safety goggles off and lean in to kiss his cheek.

He turns to look at me. Our faces so close together I could kiss him on the lips if I wanted. My breath catches.

One little inch. . .

“Hey, you’re free.” Kat comes into the room, with a second drink that she hands to me, then says, “Sorry, I couldn’t bring this outside to you. Turns out you really aren’t supposed to bring alcohol past theno alcohol beyond this point, sign at the door. Oh, and the manager wanted me to tell you, you are paying for any repairs and breakage from this.”

“I figured as much,” I say, frowning, and taking a drink of my margarita.

“There won’t be any damage from us per se,” Ethan says. “But he will have to hire someone to come in and reinstall the window and fix all this.”

“You guys don’t do that?” I ask.

“Stone and I look like contractors to you?” Spence asks.

Ethan grunts trying to set his tools down with one hand and give the window to Spence with the other.

“Got it,” Spence says as he sets it down carefully against the wall.

“Let’s get our gear loaded up,” Ethan says.

I attempt to brush the dust and cobwebs off my clothes, careful not to spill my margarita, then head to the sink to wash my hands.

Once Ethan and Spence leave the bathroom, I hazard a glance at my reflection in the mirror, mascara smudged under my eyes, lipstick chewed off my bottom lip, hair flat on the left side, face and neck red from being so close to Ethan.

Good lord, you are a mess, Sadie.

“I wasn’t going to say anything while the guys were in here,” Kat says. “But we really need to figure out a look that has you faring better in situations like this. Since you seem to attract the ones that require you being rescued.”

“I do not. And I have never once gotten stuck in a bar bathroom window.”

I pat cold water on my cheeks to try to cool them down and fluff my hair on the left.

“Maybe not, but you do seem to get into some crazy ass predicaments when Ethan is around.”

“Like what?” I ask.

“Concussion at a wedding reception, all one hundred and twenty times that you have fallen and he’s caught you—”

“How do you know about that?”

“Brad tells me everything.”

“How would Brad know?”

“Ethan tells him everything.”

“Y’all really are a close-knit group, aren’t you?”

“You have no idea.”

We leave the restroom and I see the guys are almost finished getting their gear back in the truck and ready to leave.

“Thank you!” I call out to them. Spence turns and waves, yelling goodbye. Ethan raises a hand in the air in acknowledgment without turning around. My shoulders sag.

“Let’s get another drink, and you can tell me all about it,” Kat says.
