“She’s going to have Danielle call me, it seems like it’s a fairly sure thing.”
“That’s great, Sadie. I’m happy for you.” His words are nice, but the nice doesn’t reach his eyes or activate his smile.
“So, thanks,” I say.
He nods in response and takes another drink of coffee.
“Okay, well, I’m going to go get ready for my day.” I turn to walk down the hall.
“Oh, hey, Sadie,” Ethan calls out.
Yay! He speaks!
I turn toward him, “Yeah?”
“I’ve got plans so I’ll be out late tonight, maybe not home at all. Just wanted to let you know, in the spirit of being safe roommates and all that.” He takes another sip of his coffee, still watching me over the rim.
I nod in response. “Great. Thanks for letting me know.”
It’s not until I’m in the shower that I start to cry. I’m not even one hundred percent sure why, other than that he’s so perfunctory with me. No teasing, no innuendos, no calling me Grace. I mean, I even fell down again, and he’s not calling me Grace. So, not only am I a complete klutz around this man, but I cry a lot too.
Now he’s got a date, at least I’m assuming it’s a date.
Oh, be real, Sadie, he’s not coming home, of course it’s a date.
And it’s my fault. He is going to fall in love tonight, get married, have babies, and live happily ever after. And to make matters worse, I’ll have to find a new place to live.
You should probably do that anyway.
I don’t want to find a new place to live. I want to live here, in Ethan’s beautiful house and watch him walk around shirtless. It’s what I envision heaven to be.
My phone buzzes with a new call.
My mother.
I silence the ring and let it go to voicemail. She immediately calls back. This time I answer.
“Mama? Is everything okay?”
“Whatever you did last night didn’t fix it.”
“What?”
“The TV, Sadie Ann, whatever you did last night didn’t fix it.”
“Oh, crap, I’m sorry, I forgot to check it.”
“I thought you said you had time?”
“I did, but things got a little crazy—”
“Did you and Aaron work things out?” she asks.
“No. We didn’t. And we aren’t going to. I don’t know why you think we will.”
“Well, for starters, because then we can reschedule some vendors from the wedding without losing all our money.”
“You want me to marry Aaron so you don’t lose any money?”
