“Carter. I’m Aaron Carter. Sadie’s fiancé.”

“Fiancé, huh? That’s not exactly the way I heard it. But I suppose that’s for you kids to figure out. For now, I need you to leave so this poor girl can get her rest.”

I hear the door open and close and ease one eye open. Only the nurse remains.

“Thank you,” I whisper.

“You rest, okay?” she says. I nod in response and feel myself drift away to a blissful nothingness.

* * *

I don’t know how much time has passed when I open my eyes next. But Ethan is back and lounging in the chair next to the bed, with his right ankle resting on his left knee. He’s dressed casually in well-worn jeans, flip-flops, and a white t-shirt that is snug in all the right places. He’s wearing glasses and reading on a tablet.

Holy pillar of hunky-ness.

I clear my throat softly and he looks over at me, smiling when he sees my eyes open. He takes off the glasses and sets them and the tablet down. Then leans over to brush the hair out of my eyes.

“Hey, how are you feeling?” he asks, his voice low.

I nod and try to smile. “I’m good. I had one of those headaches earlier, and the nice nurse came and knocked me out.”

“That’s Natalie,” he says. “She’s amazing.” He takes my hand in his and runs his thumb along my skin. “She mentioned you had a visitor. You okay?”

“Yeah. It was Aaron.”

“I figured,” he says. He looks at me questioningly, but I don’t feel up to talking. Plus, I’m not even sure what to say. I shake my head and look down.

“Well, now that you’re awake, we can get the doc to come give you a final check-up before releasing you. Sound good?”

I smile in response.

“Okay, I’ll let Nurse Natalie know.” His voice remains low and calm. The opposite of Aaron earlier. My head is so much happier when things are low and calm. He leans in to kiss my cheek before he leaves.

Sigh.

I like the cheek better.

It’s closer to my lips.
