Chapter 41

Sadie

Ethan is waiting for me in the gangway after the plane lands and we disembark. He’s got his cast against him in a sling but holds his free arm out and I move in for a hug.

He looks down at me. “Hi,” he says smiling.

“Hi,” I say.

Ethan tries to carry my bag for me, but I tell him I’d rather he hold my hand. Plus, my bag has wheels, and I don’t have much in it. He pulls my hand up to his mouth and kisses it.

“Is this how it will always be? The two of you making googly eyes at one another? I mean, it’s okay, just let me know so I can prepare myself,” Tenley says. I laugh at her.

“Tenley,” Ethan says as we walk through the airport. “I don’t want to take your best friend from you. And I don’t want to monopolize her time. When I am with her, I plan to show her every second how much I love her. I hope that’s okay with you.”

“God, you don’t have to be so nice about it.” Tenley rolls her eyes. She pretends to be exasperated, but I know her, she’s just as taken with him as I am. Well, taken with him as the guy for me.

“So, where to? And is anyone else hungry?” Tenley asks.

“I’m starved,” I say.

“I’ll bet you worked up an appetite,” Tenley teases.

“Oh,” Ethan says. “Brad is supposed to be picking me up. I can’t drive. Let me text him and see what’s going on.” We step off to the side and Ethan pulls his phone out, hits buttons on the screen, the puts the phone up to his ear. “Hey, we just landed, you still going to pick me up? Because—”

He listens for a moment, then says, “Oh, okay. Yeah, that’s fine . . . went fucking great, man. I’ve got her right here with me . . . I know, long story. I’ll tell you all about it later . . . cool. Feel better.” He disconnects the call then turns to us and says, “Remember Spence, the guy I worked with when you got stuck in the window?”

“Yes,” I turn to smile at Tenley as I answer Ethan. “I remember Spence.”

“He’s picking us up. Brad is sick. Though come to think of it, I don’t know why he didn’t ask Chance or Cole. Shit, we could have Uber’d too for that matter. Oh well, maybe Spence will want to grab a bite with us.”

I look at Tenley who looks back at me. “What can I say,” she says. “I’m fucking psychic.”

We end up getting a pizza and bringing it back to Ethan’s house to eat on the patio. Tenley wastes no time sidling up to Spence. Not that he seems to mind at all. For every flirtatious remark of Tenley’s, Spence throws it back at her two-fold.

Maybe she’s met her match.

The two sit at the patio table and banter while Ethan and I curl up on the same double lounger as my first night here. It seems like so long ago, but it was only a matter of weeks. Ethan has his left arm around me and I’m curled into his chest. Content to stay here for the rest of my life.

“Will you stay here tonight?” he asks in a low voice.

“Of course,” I say. “I mean, I was planning on it. I didn’t really think . . . it didn’t really occur to me, I mean I guess I assumed I would, and Tenley would take the guest room.”

“Perfect,” he says. “What about after that?”

“What do you mean, after that?”

“Are you moving back?”

“I don’t know. I hadn’t really thought about it.”

“Will you?”

“Think about it?”

“No, move back. With me. Move back and in with me.”
