The man raises his arm to get one of the extra security worker’s attention. “Excuse me, can you come here, please.”

The worker looks around, then comes over. “How can I help you, sir?”

“These two women are creating a nuisance and keep trying to cut in line in front of me, though I’ve repeatedly asked them not to.”

“Officer,” the lady who let us cut in line in front of her starts. “These girls were doing no such thing and were not a problem at all. They are just trying to get to their gate on time so she can reunite with her beau,” the lady says. I mouth athank youto the woman.

“When is your flight,” the worker asks.

“Five minutes. Well, four now.” I say.

“Well, since you are such a nuisance, we’d better hurry up and get you out of this man’s way so he isn’t bothered by you anymore.” The worker leads us over to the special VIP security machine where there is no line and we breeze right through. Then he radios someone with one of those little golf carts to drive us to the gate.

“I love you,” Tenley yells to the man as they cart away us.

We arrive at our gate with one minute to spare. Only to find they have cancelled the flight.

“Guess we should have checked those big arrival-departure signs before we freaked out,” Tenley says. The next flight isn’t for another two hours. And it’s full. Tenley gets us on the standby list, so we park it in the bar closest to our gate. I take two tequila shots before I’ve calmed down enough to sit still.

“I can’t believe this,” I say.

“I know, but don’t worry, California isn’t going anywhere.”

“That’s not the point.”

“Are you worried that your man will forget about you?” she teases.

“No, it’s just now that we are doing this, I want to do it. Get to it. The waiting is killing me, you know?”

Tenley raises her hand toward the bartender. “I think we’re going to need another round.”
