“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“Shit. What are you gonna do?”
“I was gonna take care and not call her. But now I’m not so sure. It’s not like I had a life or death experience—”
“You kinda did.”
“I fell through a roof.”
“Two stories.”
I shrug. “Doesn’t matter, I’m fine. Point being, I’m not letting her just walk away, that’s for sure.”
“So . . .?”
“So, I think I’m gonna go get her.”
“From Texas?”
“Yep.”
“Well, shit. Okay then. Yippee-ki-yay, mother fucker. When?”
“I don’t know. When do flights leave? Today? Tomorrow?”
“I think tomorrow is soon enough. It’s probably better all the way around if you get some rest tonight.”
“True. Okay, tomorrow it is then. I’ve got nothing to lose.”
We pull up in front of my house. Kat’s car is in my driveway. Brad shuts off the engine planning to go inside to see her.
“I think that’s a good plan,” he says. “And you are correct, you have nothing to lose. I like it.”
“Thanks, man.”
Kat left the door unlocked, so we head inside and find her in Sadie’s room with a couple of boxes she is filling with clothes and accessories.
Brad goes in ahead of me and smacks her in the ass. Then grabs her and kisses her. Long and slightly inappropriately to be in front of anyone else. Kat moans in appreciation. I look away, not wanting a reminder of Sadie.
Kat looks at me once she finally pulls away. “Sorry, E. About that.” She motions to Brad. “And about this.” She motions to the boxes. “I didn’t expect you back so fast. Hey, nice cast!” She points to my bright blue cast that goes from my hand up to the shoulder.
“Thanks,” I say, tilting my chin toward the boxes on the bed. “She ask you to do this?” Even though I already know the answer from Brad.
Kat nods.
“When?” I ask.
“Does it matter?”
I shake my head and turn away. “Just lock the door on your way out.” I wave over my head with my left hand and head into my room to book a ticket to Texas, and then sleep like the dead before deciding how to proceed with the rest of my life.

I booked a morning flight because I knew I couldn’t just sit around waiting for my plane to take off.
I dress in jeans, a t-shirt, and an SSFD ball cap then throw a clean shirt and boxer briefs in a backpack along with my toothbrush and am out the door and in my Uber. Thirty-minute drive to the airport, and I arrive in plenty of time to check-in, make it through security, and grab a coffee.
