Chapter 27
Sadie
We are just finishing dinner when Ethan ups the emotional ante of the evening.
“I like you.” His face softens and he looks down at his lap. Almost like he’s embarrassed.
HE LIKES ME!
“I like you,” I say. His head pops up, and he looks at me, his eyes flitting back and forth between mine. I keep my gaze direct and honest. Because I like him. I like him a hell of a lot. He’s so different from what I expected. Sincere, polite, flirtatious, kind, sexy as all get out. Given those attributes, I’m not sure what I expected though. A player, maybe. Someone who is crass and abrupt.
He reaches across the table and takes my hand, running his thumb lightly across my skin. A shiver runs through me.
I’m swooning.
Literally.
“I like touching you.” His eyes are soft and his smile warm.
God, I love it when he touches me. And when he looks at me like that, with those beautiful eyes. I could get lost in them.
“I could get lost just looking in your eyes,” I blurt out.
“Me too,” he says.
Deep breath, Sadie. Calm down, he’s just a boy.
A guy.
A man.
A sexy as all get out man.
The server comes and sets down our check. “Whenever you’re ready.” She reaches for our plates.
Ethan clears his throat, squeezes my hand, then pulls his back toward him, going for his wallet in his back pocket.
“Oh, here.” I grab my purse and dig through it for my wallet.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m getting my wallet,” I say.
“Why?”
“To pay my share.”
“This is a date not a business luncheon.”
“I know.”
“Well, then put your purse away. I asked you out, I am paying for tonight. I will pay every time I ask you out.”
“What if I ask you out?”
“I’ll still pay.”
“That doesn’t follow logic.”
