“It’s fucking c-cold.”

“You’re from Colorado.”

“And you’re from hell.” He tried to escape, but Kai caught him around the waist.

I jumped a little when Travis dipped his face into my neck and brushed my skin with his lips. “Let’s not be around for how that turns out.”

“Murder or weird shit,” I guessed.

The second one was unlikely to happen, considering I heard a loud howl in the woods that quickly grew closer. A moment later, West burst through the trees, headed directly for the edge. He leapt farther than any of us had, then drew his legs in to do a cannonball.

“Kai is gonna drown him,” I laughed as I grabbed Travis’ hand to pull him away. He threaded his fingers with mine and made a sound of agreement.

Before we reached the trees, he turned to me with a smile. I shook my head, but it was pointless. He tugged me to the edge, keeping hold of my hand, and for the first time, we jumped in together. We hit the water, still holding onto each other. I didn’t intend to let go, not even if the world suddenly began to collapse and tried to tear us apart.

Chapter 67

Travis

We couldn’t play yesterday, which wasn’t the end of the world, but it felt like it now that game day was finally here. For some reason, I felt angry, and I’d been pacing since Tessa woke me up an hour ago. Keeping myself under control wasn’t always hard since I’d been doing it for a long time, but my temper still flared hot sometimes, especially if things were stressful.

It was early, so there was a while until I had to leave for the last game. This was what decided the winner. There were no more chances. Everything rode on this, and I couldn’t stand the idea of coming this far only to lose.

“You’re going to win,” Roman said as if he could hear my thoughts.

“You don’t know that.”

“Okay, nobody does, but it doesn’t hurt to be positive.”

“Since when are you positive?”

He took a drink of his coffee, but I could see the tension he was trying to hide. Even though he’d calmed a lot of his own anger, it still existed just like mine. I knew that it would come out eventually, and I was sure that I could handle it, but not today.

We’d slept together the two nights we’d been back in Georgia, but I knew that I was still holding myself back. There was this lingering fear that when I woke up, he’d be gone. There was no rush, but there’d always been something about Roman that made me want to leap straight in, like we were running through the woods directly to the swimming hole.

He got to his feet and stepped into my path. My hands fisted at my sides, and he studied my face.

“Where are you at?” he asked.

“I don’t know what you mean by that.”

“Your head. Your mood. Your thoughts.”

I went around him without answering the question.

“Don’t hide from me,” he said. “Travis.”

“Just let me pace,” I snapped.

“Is it helping?”

When I didn’t respond, he moved in front of me again and wrapped his arms around my neck. I barely hesitated before I hugged him back, holding him tightly against me.

“What can I do?”

I let out a long breath. “Nothing. I’m just wound up.”

“We have a few hours until you have to get ready. You could take a bath or maybe a nap.”
