Hayes broke protocol and left his place with his brothers to join her. He placed a hand below hers on the staff, and together, they lifted it high. The cheers increased.
“Princess,” he said.
“Hmm?”
“Do you have time for a ride down to the southern lands?”
He could tell he’d surprised her with the request, or perhaps the timing. “Certainly.”
“Excellent. Our first tenants have purchased their own land.”
The sudden emotion on her face was quite gratifying.
“I thought you would want to be there.”
She nodded, obviously unable to speak. But then she surprised him with a strong, clear voice. “You are the best choice I ever made. Thank you for this beautiful life.”
