I shake my head lightly, grinning like a loon. I shouldn’t be enjoying rehashing this as much as I am. I look around to make sure we’re still not being overheard. Laura’s eyes snag on mine and she nudges Lexi. The two of them head our way.

Hoo-boy. This is about to get interesting.

Shannon follows my gaze and giggles. “You didn’t honestly think you were keeping this under wraps, did you?”

“You and Duke did.”

“Sort of.”

“We can’t let Fiona know yet,” I explain.

“Gotcha.”

Laura and Lexi reach us. Em’s the only one in our friend group who’s missing right now. I glance around and see her over with the kids near an inflatable bounce house.

“What’s the scoop?” Laura asks.

Shannon eyes Lexi and then Laura. “Do not squeal.”

“When have you known me to squeal?” Laura answers.

“Point taken,” Shannon says. “But as far as you are concerned, we’re talking about whether they have enough mustard for all the hot dogs Jed White is cooking up today. Got it?”

Both my friends nod. Then they look from Shannon to me and back to Shannon, like she’s the one with the secret as big as Alaska tucked in her back pocket.

“Jayme?” Shannon prompts me.

Lexi and Laura look at me.

“Grant kissed me. I kissed him. We kissed.”

I beam. Both Laura and Lexi’s mouths drop open. Seriously. They stand there like they’re the clown faces on one of those carnival games where you have to get the ping pong ball in the clowns’ mouths in order to win a life-sized purple teddy bear wearing a white cowboy hat.

“You what?” Laura scream-whispers.

Lexi bounces on her toes and claps her hands repeatedly like a kid about to open a giant box on Christmas morning.

“When did you get the feels for Doc McBroody?” Laura asks.

“Maybe over time. I don’t know.”

“So, no more sworn singleness?” Lexi asks carefully.

“I don’t know.”

I honestly don’t know. I don’t know what Grant’s thinking or feeling, except that we both agree Fiona can’t find out yet. If I go strictly by what that kiss told me, I’d say he wants to do a lot more kissing. And if I read his comfortable, full smile afterward, I’d say he cares about me and I’m special to him. But, I don’t know what Grant really wants or feels, and I won’t know until we talk.

“How about you?” Laura asks. “Is this a crush, or is it more?”

“Do we need to honestly grill her with twenty questions?” Shannon asks. “The woman just kissed the hot doctor, and she’s reveling in the moment. No one needs to DTR right now.”

“DTR?” Laura asks.

“Define the relationship.”

“Ahhh. Yeah. Okay. Fair enough.”

I think about Laura’s question anyway.
