“What vibe?”

Shannon looks at me with a pointed look. Her eyebrow even goes up slightly and she tips her chin down so she’s looking up at me through squinted eyes.

“Come on. There’s something between the two of you. The air literally crackles with electricity or sparks when you’re within ten feet of one another. And he looks to you, like you stabilize him or something.”

“How am I the one to stabilize anyone?” I huff out a laugh.

“You stabilize me. Think about it. When I was coming unglued over Duke, you were the one to keep me sane.”

“That’s different. You’re my girlfriend. I’ll be there for you through thick or thin.”

“Well, I think Grant picks up on that same aspect of your personality. But it’s more than that. He couldn’t keep his eyes off you at the bonfire at Aiden’s the other night.”

“You’re crazy.” I shake my head and try to write a fortune, but all that comes to mind is,Would it kill you to smile?

Then I picture Grant opening the cookie, reading it and scowling that arrogant, infuriating, somehow gorgeous scowl. The whole scene in my head makes me want to go online, splurge on a jumbo box of fortune cookies, and have them two-day prime-shipped to his front doorstep. Even though I know he’d never indulge in something so frivolous as cracking open a cookie with a fortune.

“Grrr.” I utter without thinking.

Shannon gives me a confused look.

“I’m not crazy,” she continues. “He watched you like it was his job to keep tabs on your whereabouts at all times. And then when Brooks offered you that seat, Grant moved so quickly to make sure you didn’t end up in it. You had to notice that. I think Grant might be jealous.”

“Of Brooks?” I shake my head.

“Why not? Brooks is young, attractive, and single. You’re young, attractive, and single.”

“Brooks and I are friends.”

“I know that. But maybe grumpy Grant doesn’t. And he was seriously doing that territory marking thing guys do.”

“Men,” I huff. But, I still feel the unbidden blush creep up my cheeks.

“You’re blushing!”

I readjust myself on the couch. “It’s hot in here.”

“Not any hotter than it was five minutes ago. You’re blushing. Admit it. You owe me that. I told you about Duke before I told anyone else.”

“Okay. Grant’s attractive—unfairly handsome—and his body is in great shape.”

I picture his arms. Now that I’ve seen them in a T-shirt it’s hard to unsee the taut lines of his muscles. And he’s got those eyes. But all that’s canceled out by his irritating personality.

“He’s infuriating. And he goes from hot to cold faster than the downstairs shower.”

“But you like him.”

Do I? Even if I did, I couldn’t act on these feelings. Wouldn’t act on them. And Shannon’s totally imagining Grant having feelings for me—unless those feelings are ones of distaste for my awesome T-shirts and my sunny disposition. He’s made it clear he only has two occupations in life: Fiona and medicine. He’s not interested in a relationship.

“I won’t fall for a doctor!” I blurt without thinking.

I won’t fall for anyone. I’m not falling for anyone. This whole conversation took a ride on the crazy train and I need to get off at the next stop. I am not getting into a relationship. That’s final.

“And why can’t you fall for a doctor?”

“It’s so cliché. It’s like every cheesy Hallmark movie ever. I don’t do Hallmark movies. That’s why I write aliens and vampires. You’ll never see a Vampire on Hallmark.”

“At least he’s a grumpy doctor. That’s not very Hallmark-ish.”
