"You what?" I ask, my brows almost hitting my hairline.

She shakes her head at me. "I always thought you should have been with Kane instead of Riley," she admits.

"And you didn't think to tell me this before."

She smirks. "Because you'd have listened," she deadpans. "These are the kinds of things you have to figure out yourself. And who's to say I was right about it. But despite the obvious issues, I'm glad you've found each other."

"Thanks, Mom. That means a lot. I mean, I thought you'd tell me that I'd lost my mind and disown me after everything."

"Never, baby. We all make mistakes, we all do things we regret. It's what makes us human."

I smile at her, feeling some of the weight I've been carrying around lift from my shoulders.

"Have you guys eaten?" she asks, pushing from her chair.

"Yeah, we have."

"Okay, well, I'm going to go and get something. You're all welcome to stay as long as you like, you know that."

We follow her out of her office and she heads straight for the kitchen while we loiter in the hallway.

"You wanna hang here?" Kane asks, looking down at me with a little hope twinkling in his eyes.

"I really, really don't," I admit. If I'm going back to Maddison and leaving him here soon, the last thing I want to do is hang out with our younger siblings for the night.

"Okay, good. Me either."

"We're heading out."

Kyle nods at his brother. "I'll come back tomorrow." He winks before smiling at me.

"Thank you," I mouth to him.

"Call me if you find anything out, yeah?" he demands of Kane. "Everything will be okay. Jada will make it happen."

"Let's hope she can."

With a squeeze of my hand, he takes a step toward the door and we make our way out.

Kane

Iwrap my arms around Letty's waist as she tips the dregs of her coffee down the sink and rinses her cup.

"Don't go," I breathe.

"Kane," she sighs. "I've got class. We can't both fall behind while this all gets sorted out."

I know.

"Do what you need to do today and then I'll see you after, yeah?"

"You got it."

When we got back last night, I called Coach. He needed to know what was happening before I didn't show up to practice this morning or he heard it from someone else. He's been on my side this whole time, I have no idea if that's really because he wanted me there or because he knew what was going on, and the claims that Luca was making about me at the beginning of the season were in fact correct. That I was only there because of Victor.

I like to think that's not the only reason I was there. Jada said herself that my application was solid, maybe I would go in off my own back. That maybe things will be okay.
