"He loves you, Ky. He'd literally do anything for you."

"I know," he says, shoving his hand into his hair and tugging on the lengths, the move is so much like his big brother's it makes my chest ache despite the fact I can feel Kane's curious gaze burning into my back.

He's more than capable of getting out himself, so the fact he's not moved yet means he must think Kyle needs this moment with me and he's giving us the space he needs.

"It's over now. They've come to an agreement and Kane's free."

"That's good. That's so fucking good. But what now?"

"One step at a time, yeah?" I reach out and squeeze his shoulder in support. "You're both family now, and we look after our own. Everything will be fine. You just need to focus on graduating and where you want to go next year."

"Maddison," he says without missing a beat. I smile and nod, I can't say I'm surprised.

"Right, well let's focus on getting you both there then, shall we?"

He nods.

"Come on, let's get the invalid out. He really loves all the extra fuss he's getting."

"Really?" Kyle asks, screwing up his nose.

"No, he fucking hates it. It's amusing. Mr. Always In Control, has very much lost control."

"Sweet. Let's have some fun then."

I grab Kane's bags from the trunk while Kyle helps him from the car and leads him toward the house, much to his displeasure if the complaining I can hear is anything to go by.

My trunk is full, not only did the Harrises bring my car, but they stripped out Kane's room at the house first. He didn't look surprised when Devin told them what they'd done. He knew he was going to have to move out. Living in that house meant he was connected to Victor and that was not an option. Walking away meant walking away from everything.

He put on a brave face and smiled at them all as if nothing was wrong, but I could see underneath it all that it hurt having his lifelong friends remove him from their lives so easily.

With everything weighing me down, I trudge up to the house and dump it all just inside the front door.

"Coffee?" Kyle asks me from his place in the kitchen.

"Please. White one sugar." He nods and sets about making them.

Leaving the bags where they are, I walk over to Kane who's sitting on the edge of the couch with his head in his hands.

"Hey, is everything okay? Do you need more pills?"

"No, I'm good." He looks at me and I can't help but gasp at the darkness in his eyes. "What's wrong?"

"I…" He runs his hands through his hair. "I-I just…" He looks behind me for a beat before pushing to stand. "I'm going to lie down. I just need…" He trails off once more before he disappears down the hall to his bedroom. The sound of the door closing echoes around the house and I blow out a confused breath.

Everything was good. Great, even. What the hell just happened?

"Okay, so I won't make his then," Kyle mutters from the coffee machine.

"I don't… shit. I thought he was okay," I admit, throwing myself back on the couch.

"He is, Let," Kyle says, placing my mug down on the coffee table and sitting in the chair opposite me.

"He wants to help everyone, fix everything. Be in control like you said out there, and he's not. He's got no job, no college, no nothing right now. He's freaking out."

I stare at Kyle as his words settle.

"Yeah, you're right. Fuck, I hate this. I wish I could fix it and just get him back into college."
