"Or what?"
"Or…" She blows out a long breath as she tries to come up with a threat. "I don't know, just stop it. She's been through enough and you're making it worse."
"Oh yeah, and what do you know about what she's been through?"
"Honestly?" she asks, slumping back in the chair. "Not much. But she's suffering, that much is obvious, and you're not helping her start over here."
"It's not my responsibility to make her life easier."
"And it's not your job to make it harder, either."
Touché.
"You know nothing about what's happened between the two of us, so I suggest you keep your nose out of it." I sit up as if I'm about to get up and walk away. I want to, this chick is pissing me off. But there's a big part of me that wants to hear her out. Hell knows I'm not ready to do the same to Letty, but this might get me some of the information I need.
"I heard the two of you arguing the night of your accident."
"So? That makes you an expert, does it?"
"No, not in the slightest. It just tells me that you need to talk. She's drowning, Kane, and I suspect that you're the only one who can stop her from going under."
My lips part to respond but I soon find I have no words.
"And I think you are too."
"You're wrong," I spit, twisting to get up.
"You need her but you're too pigheaded to admit it."
"You don't know fuck all."
Our eyes meet in a battle of wills. She's begging me to admit that she's right and I'm pleading for her to let it go.
"Okay, fine. Keep living in denial without the one person who could make it any better."
"Great. I would say that this has been fun, but really, it hasn't, so…"
I stand, swiping my bag from the back of my chair.
I've got my back to her about to walk away when she speaks again.
"Talk to her, Kane. Find out the truth. I think you might be surprised by what she has to say."
I suck in a breath, a question on the tip of my tongue but I swallow down the words and walk away.
I don't want to talk to her friend about this, I don't even want to talk to Letty about this.
Reluctantly, I hang around campus until my afternoon class. Knowing it's business with Ellis makes it easier, plus once we're done, he'll take me home.
I really need to go buy a new fucking car. Is it fucked up that it feels too soon? I'm still grieving over my last one.
"Party tonight at the Kappa house. You in?" Ezra calls the second Ellis and I step through the front door later that afternoon.
"No," I bark, marching through the living area and straight to the kitchen to get a drink and something to eat.
"Oh come on, the Kappa’s get the best pussy."
"Don't give a fuck," I shout over my shoulder.
