We’ve been friends since we were in diapers, he should know by now that I do what I want, regardless of what he, my little brother, or anyone else thinks.

“Fine, but I want it on record that you’re probably going to make a huge mistake tonight.”

“Whatever,” I mutter, taking a pull from the bottle but I’m disappointed when the beer hits my throat. It’s not strong enough and I feel like I’m going to need more to get through tonight.

Tension radiates from me as we stand there in silence. The music continues to pound and other partygoers come and go. All of them glance at us, the usual wary expression on their faces and they soon disappear again.

Now we’re inside, there’s no way the news of our arrival isn’t going to hit her ears.

I just need to make sure that doesn’t make her run.

“What are you going to do?” Devin inquires.

I blow out a long breath, throwing my bottle into the trash at the other side of the room with a perfect shot.

I shrug. “I just want to talk to her,” I lie.

“Bullshit. You really expect me to believe that after everything?”

“I don’t give a shit what you believe, Dev.”

He eyes me suspiciously. He has a right to. He knows how much I hate Scarlett Hunter and despite that, how much she gets under my skin.

It was never meant to be this way for us. But she made it happen.

It’s all her fault things got fucked up.

There was a time I wanted to protect her. Now all I want to do is hurt her for all the pain she has caused me.

Leaving town was probably the best thing that ever happened to her, and not just because of the opportunities it allowed her, but the fact she’s managed to escape me for the best part of three years.

“Those Hunters look hot as hell, man,” Ezra says, joining us in the kitchen.

My teeth grind with the knowledge that he’s had a better look at her than I have.

“You’re supposed to be watching her,” I grit out.

“Ellis has it covered, man. Just getting drinks.”

He steps up to me, and I have his shirt in my fists in seconds. His eyes go wide in surprise for a beat but then I’m sure an inkling of amusement flickers through them.

I lean into his face, our noses only a breath apart.

“Don’t go anywhere fucking near her,” I warn, my voice low and menacing.

Of all my boys, he’s the only one who’d accidentally go there. He’s a fucking dog and has zero shame or morals when it comes to getting pussy.

“Bro, man. I got it. Hunters are off-limits. We got that message about a decade ago.” He rolls his eyes as if this is all one big joke. And despite the fact I want to break his fucking nose for running his mouth, I release him and push him away from me.

He stumbles over his own feet and unfortunately for me, Ellis appears in the doorway right before he plummets to the ground and catches his twin at the last second.

“What the hell?”

“She good?” I ask Ellis, ignoring the scowl on his face.

“Uh…” He looks between his brother and me. “Yeah, just dancing with her friends.”

“She know we’re here?”
