“Fight as much as you like, Princess. I’m not letting you go.”

I scream behind his hand, my feet flying backward in the hope of connecting with his shin, but somehow he dodges every attempt I make.

He continues forward into the darkness, twigs snapping underfoot and leaves rustling as we get deeper into the undergrowth.

The sound of rumbling thunder in the distance only adds to my misery.

Thoughts of our surroundings and possible drenching are soon cut off when he slams me up against a tree.

My breath rushes from my lungs in shock as the music from the house starts up in the distance.

His fingers thread into my hair and he drags my head to the side so he can see me but I can’t quite see him.

“Are you going to do this the easy way or the hard way?”

“Fuck you, Kane,” I spit the second he removes his hand from my mouth.

There’s no point screaming or crying for help.

If there’s anyone else out here in the woods with us then they’re probably a murderer. Or worse, Kane’s crew who’ll do whatever he commands.

I’m not sure if being alone with him or part of a group right now is better or worse.

“Shut the fuck up,” he growls, pulling harder on my hair until it begins to sting. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Princess.”

“I’m not playing anything,” I argue innocently, although it’s a lie. I knew exactly what I was doing with Leo. I knew it would infuriate Kane.

“Nice try. I know you better than that, Scarlett.” The way he growls my name sends an electric bolt down my body in a way that Leo couldn’t. Where his touch felt… nice, Kane’s is pure fire.

It’s always been this way with us. It’s why things have spiraled so far out of control between us.

“Whatever. You’ve made your point, can I go back now?”

The laugh that rumbles up his throat is pure evil and reminds me of the reason most people are scared of him.

Me though? I remember the boy before the anger, the hate.

Seeing that blond-haired, blue-eyed boy softens him to me somewhat.

“You’re fucking delusional.”

“You want to hurt me. Punish me. Make me pay. I get it, Kane. But it’s not going to change anything.”

“Maybe not,” he says, taking a step toward me, the length of his body burning the skin of my back. “But it’ll make me feel a little bit fucking better.”

“Do your worst,” I say with a resigned sigh.

Chapter Four

Kane

“Do your worst.”Her defeated tone rings in my ears.

Oh hell no.

A loud crack of thunder echoes into the night as the sound of approaching rain gets louder.

Ripping her from the tree, I spin her and press her back against it. She glances back to the house, and for the briefest moment, I wonder if she’s about to try to run.
