"I have an idea."
"What idea?"
"Do you trust me?"
My nose scrunches.
"Give me a week. If he wants to stay away, he will. But if he doesn't…"
"You really think it will work?"
"I don't know. But it'll do something."
Chapter Fifty-Six
Chase
Iwake to a voicemail from Forest and a flurry of texts. I only catch the latest.
Forest: You fucked up bad, but you can fix it.
That could end a threat to kill me or a request for an apology or a demand for a shotgun wedding.
Usually, I know how Forest is going to react to something.
Right now, I don't have a clue.
I will talk to him. After this.
I skip breakfast. Dress in a hurry. Pick up coffee on the way to Hunter's place.
He opens after two knocks.
Surprise streaks his expression. He rubs his eyes. Blinks three times. "Chase…"
I hold up his drink. "From the place down the street."
His fingers brush mine as he takes it. "Drip or pour over?" He tries to make his voice light, but he doesn't quite get there.
"What do you think?" My attempt at teasing is even worse. Fuck, this is bizarre. I'm on my brother's doorstep. Askinghimto letmeinto his life.
For the past two years, I've kept him out of my life. I'm still not sure I can handle him in my life.
But I can't wait anymore. I need to make this right.
We might never be best friends again. We might never be close again. But we can be okay.
He takes a sip. Lets out a low sigh. "Fuck, that's good."
"Save it for your girlfriend."
He pulls the door open. Motionscome in.
I take a deep breath and step inside. "Is she here?"
"Class." He motions to the dining table in the living room.Have a seat.
It's an invitation, not an order, but I still feel like I'm being called to the principal's office.
