He sets my plate in front of me. Sits across from me. "Good question."

"I, uh… thanks again. For dinner."

"Sure."

I pick up my chopsticks. Scoop broccoli and rice. "It's a very caring thing to do—"

"I was cooking anyway."

"You didn't have to offer me any."

He arches a brow. "I'm supposed to send you home hungry?"

"Other guys would."

"They have no game."

I laugh. "Is that it?"

"Yeah. If you get hungry, you'll leave."

"So it's just to keep me here."

He nodsyeah.

"Do you actually believe that?"

His chuckle is soft. "No. But it's true."

I nod. It is.

"Griffin's like you."

"Sexy as hell?" I try to make my voice teasing, but it's more nervous than anything.

"To the ladies, yeah." His eyes light up. "Blunt. Though the way you do it is a lot cuter."

"Thank you." I bite the head of my broccoli, so I won't blush.

"After Grace left, he made a big thing about taking me out to meet someone else."

"Yeah?"

"But I wouldn't play along. I brought books or comics."

"You read?"

"Doesn't seem like I read?" His voice is light. Teasing.

"No, I meant, more—I don't see any books." I motion to his shelf. "What do you read?"

"Don't laugh."

"I'm getting a PhD in statistics. What do you think I read?"

"Books about economics."

"Sometimes." A lot. "But I read fiction too."
