"What's the deadline?"
"Before we get back to LA."
"To your place?" I ask.
"I thought I was staying with you."
"Really?" My lips curl into a smile. I want her as a roommate. I always have. But with Jackson so jealous, it was never a possibility.
"It won't cramp your style?"
"No, I'll make sure to bring home women who like being watched," I tease.
"Oh my God."
"You'll learn a lot of shit watching me."
She shakes her head. "You're deranged."
"Yeah, but you love it."
"I'll love my twenty dollars." She pulls her hand to her side. "You have to buy it before we get back to our place."
My chest warms. "Our place?"
"It's temporary."
"So's life."
She laughs. "When did you get morbid?"
"Must be the My Chemical Romance you played."
She flips me off.
I steer the conversation back to her taste in music, but my head refuses to get in gear.
It stays fixed on that beautiful mental image.
Jules writhing in pleasure as she groans my name.
Chapter Nine
Juliette
After lunch, we head to the second biggest site in Baker: The Alien Fresh Jerky store.
The store beckons patrons with anX-Filesstyle green alien head, surrounded by a red logo. The desert parking lot abounds with sedans, minivans, and a silver spaceship.
Inside, the bliss of air-conditioning greets me. This whole Las Vegas in August thing is such a bad idea. But I can't say I regret anything.
I need to be away from home. I need to be somewhere completely different. I need to be with people who don't automatically take Jackson's side.
"You need more iced tea?" Griffin motions to the soda case in the back of the store.
"I'm fine." I'm already buzzing from the caffeine. At least, I think it's the caffeine.
"The next Starbucks is more than an hour away."
