It's hard to tell with Chase. His warm is most people's cold.
Chase's lips curl into a frown as he spots the bottle. Then he reads the label and his brow relaxes. "You happy?"
"Yeah." I take a cup from Emma. Pour Chase a glass.
He nodsthanksas he takes it. "You love her?"
My stomach twists.
He shakes his headthat's not good. "Wasn't she engaged recently?"
"A week ago." Emma coughs. "Not that I keep tabs. I just… uh… we're friends."
"Facebook friends," I say.
"It was on Facebook," Emma says.
Hunter's gaze flits from me to Chase. "I should get back to work." He offers me his hand. "Really, Griff. Congratulations. Don't let anyone tell you this isn't a great thing."
I shake his hand.
He pulls me into a hug. Pats my back.
It's reassuring. The way I always imagined a hug from a parent or mentor.
I guess Hunter is a mentor. He's a fantastic artist and a smart guy. He turned his fucked-up life into something happy and healthy.
Maybe I should take more advice from him.
Chase waits until Hunter and Em are out of earshot. He leans in to whisper, "She's a good kid."
"Yeah."
"You are too." His voice is steady, even, impossible to read. "I hope you two figure it out."
"Not dedicated to destroying love?" I ask.
He shakes his head. "It's good for some people." He doesn't say it, but the implication is clear. It's not for him. Not after the way his ex-girlfriend ripped his heart out. "I never thought it was for you."
"Me either."
"Don't fuck it up."
I chuckle. "That's what I would say."
"That's how you know it's good advice."
He's right. As much as I want to shrug and pretend like I don't care, I can't.
This is the most important thing in my life.
Jules is the most important person in my life.
I can't fuck it up.
Whatever it takes, I won't fuck this up.
