Griffin

After way too little sleep, I head to the shop Jules likes. Coffee and hardboiled eggs settle my stomach, but they fail to ease my headache.

My head throbs. It screamsyou're not enough for the only person you've ever loved.

Not that I'm capable of that word.

Or explaining this to her.

Or understanding her.

But I am capable of this—

I buy her a matcha latte and a blueberry muffin. Head back to her hotel room. Knock on the door.

"Hello?" Her footsteps move closer. Then stop. She pulls the door open. Stares at me dumbstruck. "Griff, I…"

"Check out is in an hour."

"I know."

"Dean was thinking we'd leave after lunch. He has an early appointment tomorrow."

"Do you…" She bites her lip.

I swallow a sip of my cold brew. It wets my parched throat, but it doesn't make conversation any easier. "I'm working all day tomorrow."

"Right. Good. You're good at your job. So that's good."

"Yeah." My fingers brush hers as I hand over the take out cup and the paper bag. "We're gonna eat at the restaurant downstairs."

"Oh."

"You're welcome to join."

She shakes her head. "No, I…" She takes a long sip of matcha. Lets out a soft sigh. Catches herself. "Sorry."

"Don't apologize." I still love her groan. And not just because I love watching her come. Because I love her bliss. Every kind of bliss. I always will.

"But—"

"I'll see you later."

"Griff, I—" Her gaze shifts to her engagement ring. "Thank you."

I don't know what to say, so I settle on—"you're welcome."

There isn'tmuch to pack, but it still takes forever.

I don't want to leave this room. It's the place where Jules and I spent our wedding night.

Sure, she was so exhausted she fell asleep.

And it's entirely possible she no longer wants anything to do with me.

It's still the bed I shared with her.
