Chapter Thirty-One

Juliette

"Okay." I press my lips together. "Okay."

"Yeah?" Griff's eyes light up.

I want a better answer. I want to feel as sure as he does. To scream from the mountaintops.

I really do want to believe in magic.

But this is crazy. Impulsive. Foolish.

Can something this ridiculous really last forever?

If I fuck it up and lose Griff—

That can't happen.

I need to do something to hold onto him. "While we're in Vegas." I swallow hard. "Then we go back to LA."

"As friends?"

Yes. We need to stay friends after the magic ends. "We give it the trip. Then we decide."

He nodsokay.

"And if either one of us decides 'no,' we go back to how it was. Like this never happened."

"Jules—"

"We don't have to pretend. We'll just… we'll only be friends."

His eyes bore into mine. "I'll always be your best friend."

"You promise?"

"Yeah." His voice is earnest.

But it doesn't convince my heart.

Chapter Thirty-Two

Juliette

The Coca-Cola store is a shrine to branding. The bottom floor shows off Coca-Cola shirts from every decade and country, in every color of the rainbow.

Griff picks up an old timey gumball machine. "What do you think?"

"It's a knickknack."

"Would look good next to our TV."

"Would it?"

He shakes his head, sending his wavy hair in every direction. "But this." He holds up a snow globe—two polar bears drinking soda. "This really captures the Christmas spirit."

"In August?"
