“Henry,” I hear Adrianna’s voice. “I’m sorry but in case you’re still awake. I’m wondering whether you need me to get you lunch.”
“Thanks, but it won’t be necessary, Adrianna. I’ll get it myself later.”
“Are you sure?” she insists. “I’m going down to Hill Street Cafe.”
Damn. “Okay, get me a tuna sandwich. Thanks.”
“No problem,” she says and walks away.
Needless to say, I have no desire to nap or jerk off now. I sit up, feeling annoyed for a minute. What’s wrong with Adrianna? She’s been working for me for over a year, doing a good job but she is also out of line sometimes. She calls me by my first name, tends to disobey my orders from time to time, and likes to volunteer to run errands for me.
Well, I remind myself nobody's perfect. Having an overzealous employee is way better than having one that’s laid back. I sigh and return to my desk to continue what I was doing before Mila’s interview.
Chapter 3
Mila
It’s been a week since I started working for Hudson Constructions. There's a lot to be learned, but I’ve more or less learned the essentials such as laws and regulations related to the business and how to use the software to estimate the costs of a construction.
It’s near noon, and I’m reviewing a construction plan submitted by a partner architecture company. I’m checking to see whether it meets the client’s budget and objectives when the arousing scent that has never left my nostrils since the day of the interview appears, and I hear my boss clear his throat.
“Mila, You and I are going to meet with a client,” he says in his familiar deep voice that causes my heart to flutter.
“Now?” I curse silently. I was looking forward to my lunch break because I didn’t eat enough at breakfast. Not being a morning person, I’m still adjusting to my new schedule.
“Yes,” he says. “Is there a problem?”
“Oh no. I’ll close the program. Give me a minute.”
“Very well. I’ll meet you at the front of the office.”
I quickly wrap up what I’m doing, grab my purse, and get out of my cubicle.
When I get to the front of the office, Henry is speaking to Adrianna. “Are you sure you don’t need me to get you anything?” Adrianna says with a coquettish voice while batting her eyelashes at our boss.
“No thanks, Anna,” Henry says. “I’ll get something to eat after meeting with the client.”
He smiles at her warmly, and his voice is gentle. I know Adrianna has worked for Hudson for many years, but I can’t help but wonder whether there’s something else between them besides a working relationship.
I wait politely for them to finish their conversation but it doesn’t take long. “I’ll be back in about an hour,” he says to her and turns to me. “Let’s go.”
Adrianna’s smile freezes the moment she sees me, and her eyes narrow when she realizes I’m going out with the boss. “Okay, boss.”
I want to roll my eyes. What’s the problem with this woman? It’s not like I’m going out on a date with our boss. We’re meeting a client, for God’s sake.
To make my point, I keep a considerable distance between us when I follow Henry to the elevator. We wait for it to arrive in awkward silence. Those few seconds feel like a long time, and I can’t wait to rush into the car. But once inside, it feels even worse because I’m keenly aware of his male scent and his body heat. I also hear his heavy breathing, not to mention my thunderous heartbeats.
I focus on the floor indicator lights, so my eyes don’t wander onto my boss. Even so, I can’t help but notice his impressive physique from the corner of my eye. Henry is six feet three, a lot taller than my dad. It was the reason I preferred sitting on his shoulders when I was little. I felt taller than everyone around me and could see so much farther ahead. My mom called Henry my pony once, and he laughed.
Shit, recalling those innocent days makes me feel nostalgic. I miss those good old days when Mom and Dad were friendly to each other, and we were a cozy family. I also miss Henry, who felt like an uncle. He was even more indulging than my dad and seldom refused any of my requests, nothing like the cold, demanding boss he is now.
“Are you learning the ropes, Mila?” Henry’s voice interrupts my scattering thoughts.
My heart does a flip-flop but I pretend to be calm. “Oh yes. I’m learning. Thanks for asking.”
His blue eyes pierce through me like two intense light beams for a second, making me even more nervous. “Are you sure?” he says. “You can let me know if you need anything.”
Blood rushes through my vessels instantly, making my cheeks flush. My wet dreams flash in my mind at the same time. Shit. Not now. Not when I’m under his scrutiny.
