A moment later, I open my eyes slowly, looking around as if I’m here for the first time, and then my eyes zero in on Linda. “Linda, baby!” I say in Ed’s voice.

As always, Linda blinks back her tears as she exchanges greetings with her husband’s spirit.

“About our discussion yesterday, Ed. Have you given it some thought?”

“Yes, honey,” I say. “I think you should stay in our house.”

Linda’s eyes light up. “Really? You think so?”

“Yes.”

“Oh Ed, I’m so relieved to hear you say that. To tell the truth, I never want to leave this house. I’ve always wanted to see grandbabies grow up here.”

Linda hasn’t finished speaking when I hear another noise coming from the closet. A man’s cough. And this time, Linda hears it, too. “What is it?” her eyes widen.

Shit. I feel goosebumps all over me. Could it be that I've somehow really summoned Ed’s spirit back? And then, I recall what happened in the park last night and I know what it is. David.

“It’s Ed. He’s here,” I say to Linda in my own voice. “He would like to speak to you by himself.”

“Really?” Linda squeals.

“Where are you, Ed?” I say while looking around. “Would you like to say hi to Linda?”

“I’m here, honey,” I hear a man’s muffled voice sounding just like David’s when he teased me last night at the park.

Linda gasps. “Oh my god. Ed. Is it really you?”

“Yes, it’s me. And I missed you.” Damn. David is good.

Linda’s eyes are filled with tears. “I missed you too.”

After she calms down from sobbing, Linda says to her husband’s spirit, “Oh honey, I would really like to join you, but I just want to see our grandbabies before I go.”

“I know, honey. Don’t worry. I promise you grandbabies will happen soon.”

“What? How?”

“I’ll speak to David. Bring him to me.”

“Okay, Ed. I’ll go get him.”

I frown. What is David up to? I stand up. “I’ll go with you.”

“No, you stay, Zena. I’ll have a word with you, too.”

As soon as Linda leaves the room, I go to the closet and open the door. Sure enough, David’s standing inside, smirking.

“What are you doing here?”

“Helping out,” he says.

“That’s crazy.”

“You can say that again.”

“What do you plan to do next?”

He smirks. “You mean regarding my promise to my mom?”
