“Okay,” Jimmy nods.

“Let him come with us. It’s not a problem,” I say to her, wanting to hold on to the boy, rather than spending time alone with Amanda.

But Lexi doesn’t listen. Instead, she says goodbye and walks Jimmy back into the office.

“So she’s the reason for the mysterious disappearance, huh?” Amanda says.

I don’t bother to hide the truth. She’s shrewd enough to figure it out sooner or later.

But she continues on our way to my car, “Got you to babysit her boy in just two weeks? Quite a gold-digger!”

“Shut up.” I give her a warning look. “Lexi isn’t that kind of woman. And you stay away from her and don’t interfere with me this time, you hear me?”

Her mouth falls. She’s never seen me defending any woman so fiercely. “You are not serious.”

“I am.”

She falls silent for a moment but soon loses her composure. “You are not supposed to commit to any woman at all. You’ll ruin your bachelor's image. Once you’re tied to one woman, you’ll lose your fifty million fans.”

“So be it. I’m done with modeling. I quite enjoy being a vineyard owner.”

“You are out of your mind! Do you want to spend the rest of your life here in the middle of nowhere? With Burger King the only choice for lunch?”

“It sounds like a good life to me,” I say with a smirk and start my car. “Believe it or not, it’s my favorite childhood restaurant.”

Chapter 13

Lexi

“Lunchtime,” Susie says as she gets up from her desk. “I’m going to grab a pizza at Domino’s. Want anything for Jimmy?”

“No, I’m fine,” I say. “I brought lunch for us.”

“Okay, Enjoy!” Susie says. “Are you still coming to my son’s birthday party on Sunday?”

“Of course,” I say. I’ve told her as early as a month ago. “Why ask?”

“Oh, just to make sure, you know? You might have a business meeting with the boss or something,” she says with a wink.

Shit. I blush. Thanks to the photo posted on social media, the entire office staff senses something is going on between me and Devin. No one believes it was a business meeting. To make things worse, Devin insists on babysitting Jimmy. I don’t refuse his offer because Jimmy really likes him, and a male presence is good for the boy.

Since last Friday, I haven’t been to Devin’s house, but I check on the two sometimes during my breaks or on my way to the winery from the office. I miss Devin, but I try not to get close to him during work to avoid curious looks. He’s planning to take me to another vineyard for wine-tasting this evening, and I’m looking forward to it.

I hear Devin and Jimmy’s voices outside, and I hurry out of the building. When I see the tall skinny woman next to Devin, my heart plunges like a rock sinking to the bottom of a sea. Amanda Barker is famous for her infatuation with the supermodel. The relationship between the two has been ambiguous for years. The two might’ve even dated briefly. Amanda defends Devin like a mother hen, but clearly, she isn’t seeing the model as her son. She doesn’t hide her affection for the model either. More than once she declares Devin is her best friend and that their bond goes beyond a married couple. I can’t deny I’m more than a bit jealous, especially since the way she glares at me earlier clearly shows her possessiveness of the model.

I drag Jimmy back to my office, although the thought that the two are going out unsettles me. Jeez. I’m being irrational. I remind myself that Devin Gamble doesn’t belong to me. He’s just having a fling with me, and I shouldn’t take him seriously. What he said to me last night might be true, but it doesn’t mean he’s committed to me. The possessiveness he felt for me during the passionate moments was only temporary.

From inside of the building, I peek through the window and see the woman getting into Devin’s Porsche and they drive off to lunch.

Jimmy, my smart boy, obviously notices my preoccupation with the matter. “Mommy, who’s Amanda? Why can’t we go with Devin?” he asks when we sit down at my desk to eat. The rest of the staff members are either in the lunchroom or out.

“Because, baby,” I say. “Devin doesn’t belong to us.”

My son blinks, not getting what I mean. Of course, I don’t blame him. I’m not making much sense at all.

I reach my hand to smooth his messy hair. “Jimmy. Promise Mommy you won’t become too close to Devin, okay?”

“Why? You don’t like him?”
