I have so many questions, but I don’t think it’s the right moment to ask him. Instead, I follow him quietly up the stairs and into the master bedroom.

“Here it is,” he takes out a dress from the closet.

My mouth falls open as soon as I see it. It’s a Kelly green cocktail dress with a low neckline and a high slit on the side. I can never picture myself in such a gorgeous dress. How does he know green is my favorite color?

“And here are some matching earrings,” he says, holding a box in hand.

Inside the box is a pair of teardrop earrings with diamonds on the edges and emeralds in the center. “They’re so beautiful!” I gasp.

“Put them on!” Devin urges me, heading toward the door. “I’ll wait for you downstairs.

I slip on the dress after a moment’s hesitation. The V neck opens deep and wide, but the build-in cups mean I don’t have to wear my own bra. I slip on the dress, delighted to find out that it fits me perfectly. My cleavage looks nice, too, thanks to the push-up bra. The knee-length skirt is a bit tight around my hips, but the fabric is stretchy. The only thing is… my granny panties are showing! Shit. Why didn’t I wear a thong or something skimpier?

After a quick decision, I take off my panties. Much better. I nod with satisfaction as I check my behind in the mirror. I fold my own clothes and put them on the vanity top, thinking I’ll come here to change back after dinner.

After I put on the earrings, my excitement suddenly deflates. Am I really going to go out to the public with Devin Gamble? Even in the beautiful dress and jewelry, I look so…plain. I’m still a Cinderella, not a princess. I recall the hundreds of pictures Devin poses with dazzling female models. And then I picture myself standing next to him— I’ll appear a maid at best. I’ll for sure make him look bad… I can’t get out of the bathroom. Shit. I can’t do this.

I’m aware of the passing of time, but I can’t drag my cold feet out of the bathroom.

Soon I hear a knock on the door. “Are you okay? Do you need anything? Lexi?” Devin asks me in a soft voice. God. His patience makes me feel guilty. I can’t back out now, I tell myself. I can’t do this to him. Anyway, it’s a business dinner, not a date. I don’t have to look like a model.

“Yes, I am!” I take a deep breath and step out.

He steps back a step, and his eyes roam over me, blinding me with intense blue beams. “You look stunning!” his voice is so gravelly that my lady parts clench right away.

Under tight t-shirt, I see his heart thumping. He leans closer to me as if wanting to kiss me. Oh no. I can’t let him do it now. I could never get out of here if I did.

I pull away and say nervously, “It’s a beautiful dress. I’ll try not to soil it.”

“What’re you talking about?” he says with an amused look. “It’s yours.”

“What? You must be kidding. I can’t accept it. It’s too expensive.”

“Don’t worry, I’m rich,” he says in a low voice. “Besides, it’s for business, you hear me? Stop fidgeting.”

“Do you think I need to put on some makeup?” I ask. “I look horrible.”

He puts both hands on my shoulders and traps me with his blue eyes. “You. Look. Perfect.”

I nod as if being hypnotized. Smiling, he strokes my hair and then my cheek. “You don’t need to put on any makeup. You have a natural beauty that money can’t buy.”

I shudder at his touch and the sincerity in his voice. I stop babbling because I’m melting and I can’t speak.

“Thank you,” I finally manage to mumble. “You look great, too.”

And then I cringe at my silly remark.Of course he does. He’s a supermodel!

Devin seems to have forgotten the fact. “I’m glad you like my outfit,” he says with a wink.

“It’s actually my favorite,” I blurt.

“Really?” he grins. “What a coincidence. It’s my favorite, too.”

That grin makes my knees wobble again.

Damn. Why am I behaving like a teenager on her first date?Hello! This is not a date!I remind myself. I’m a mom of a four-year-old, and Devin Gamble is a supermodel and my boss. It’s preposterous to get the idea!

Bernard Vineyard is the largest and the most famous vineyard in the area. It’s the first time I’ve ever been here, although it’s only a thirty-minute drive from Sunnywood. Their tasting room is like a five-star hotel lobby, well illuminated and with display cases ten times as many as ours. The dining area is right next to the tasting room, and it’s dimly lit with fancy tablecloths.
