I’m falling asleep when I hear Mason speak, “I love you, Brittney.”

My eyes fly open. “What?”

“I fell in love with you when I first saw you at the gym, Brittney.”

He must be crazy. I rack my brain to come up with a response. He’s creeping me out, but I’m in his house and I can’t offend him. “Do I resemble Riley so much?”

“You’re much prettier than her, kitty,” he mumbles, and he leans forward to kiss me.

I block him with my hand, and thank God, there’s a knock on the door.

Mason stands up to open it, and then Maria comes in holding a tray with two glasses of orange juice. She puts the glasses on the coffee table and leaves promptly, closing the door behind her. I suddenly feel ominous as the door clicks, and I want to yell for the woman to come back, but I don’t have the strength to do it, and my eyelids feel heavy.

“You look tired,” Mason’s voice sounds distant. “You might want to nap for a moment, sweetheart. Close your eyes.”

I do as he says and lean into the back of the couch. My phone is buzzing, but I don’t even want to look at it. I feel his hand stroking my cheek, and I want to tell him to stop, but I can’t speak. He’s unbuttoning my shirt. “What’re you doing, Mason? Stop it!” I mumble as I put my hand on his.

But he doesn’t stop, and I’m too weak to fight him. I can’t keep my eyes open, not even when I hear a loud bang on the door. Someone is shouting my name, and he sounds like Andrew.Oh God. Please let him be Andrew. I pray and drift into sleep.

Chapter 16

Andrew

I’m waiting for Connor’s call before going out to meet him for dinner. He was leaving the airport just an hour ago because his plane was delayed.

I keep thinking about Britt. She didn’t look fine when she came in to work in the morning. Her eyes had dark circles, and she wasn’t smiling as usual. She didn’t get enough sleep and I guess it had something to do with the apartment. I wanted to tell her she could move back to my house anytime she wanted but didn’t say it. Damn.

My phone rings, and seeing Connor’s number, I pick it up.

“Hey, you’re back in your house?”

“Yep. I’m actually on my way to the restaurant and should be there in thirty minutes.”

“Good. I should get going too.”

“Is Brittney coming along?”

“No. She moved out yesterday.”

“What? Oh. Okay. I’ll see you, then.”

I get in my BMW and drive down the hill. The restaurant is on La Brea, and I’ll take Hollywood Blvd and drive past the gym. As I near it, my heart pounds with an idea. I should take Brittney along as Connor expected. Why not? I miss having dinner with her. Hell, I miss her. What’s the point of denying it? It’s just dinner, and after that, I’ll drive her home. I glance at my car’s clock. It’s two minutes to seven. She should be in, or I should catch her at the garage.

When I see Britt’s truck in its usual spot, I smile and park next to it. I decide to wait for her to come down instead of going up to look for her.

Five minutes passed, and she is still not here. Clients are probably holding her up. Another five minutes later, I step out of my car. I should probably go check her up to see what’s happening. As soon as I stand between our vehicles, I glance at her truck, and my mouth opens. What the hell? What happened to the window? It’s gone! Holly shit. Since there aren’t any broken pieces on the floor, it hasn’t been broken here at the garage. It must’ve happened at her apartment! Goddamn. I knew it wasn’t a safe place.

I haven’t gotten to the elevator when Darrell walks out of it. “Hey, Andrew. Why’re you back?”

“I’m looking for Brittney. Where is she?”

“She left with Mason.”

“What? What for?”

He pauses for a second. “She’s looking for another place to move to because she isn’t happy with the apartment I found her. It was noisy and someone broke into her truck.”

Damn. I was right. “Why did she have to go with Mason? Where is he taking her?”
