“Wow, you are so smart!”
Jealousy springs in my gut, and I push the door fully open with unnecessary force.
They’re both startled when they turn to look at me. The young man smiles as he greets me, “Hi, Dr. Albertson!”
“Hi Alan,” I answer without a smile. “I don’t have any office hour today,”
“Oh,” he says. “I know. I just have a couple of questions.”
“It’ll have to wait until tomorrow,” I say curtly.
Unaccustomed to my unusual rudeness, the lad’s mouth falls open. He blinks a few times and stands up, his face flushing. “Okay. I’m sorry. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
He turns on his heel and walks out of the door in no time. I slam the door shut as soon as he’s gone.
Elsie’s eyes widen at my foul temper. I’m shocked by my own behavior as well.
Damn. I’ve never refused to help any students in the past and always offered help when I’m around. That’s why they don’t bother to check my office hours before knocking on my door. I’m mad at myself. What the hell has gotten into me? Why did I lose it?
Alan is an excellent student, and I enjoy helping him. But I simply can’t forgive him for hitting on my girl—Holy Christ. Since when has Elsie become my girl?
“Are you okay?” Elsie asks in a small voice. “Should I leave so you can help your students?”
‘No!” I shout.
Her eyes widen again, and her mouth opens.
“I’m sorry,” I say, ashamed of myself for scaring the angel of a girl. I squat down in front of her, taking her hand. “I’m behaving badly. I’m not like this usually.”
Her blue eyes blink for a second. “Am I the reason for your misbehavior?”
Yes.“No, sweetheart. You’re not to be blamed. I am.”
“No way!” she reaches out a trembling hand and strokes my face.
The soft touch undoes me. I take her hand and kiss it fervently, and then I let my emotions burst. “Elsie! Sweetheart! The truth is I’m horribly attracted to you. You want to know why I have this bulge in my pants? It’s not because I want to pee. It’s because…because I want to fuck you!”
She gasps, and her hand flies to her mouth. “Oh, Albert. I didn’t know professors spoke the word!”
Her reaction puts me into further shame. Damn. I doubt I’ve gotten my message across. She probably doesn’t even know what I mean and thinks I’m speaking the word as a mere curse. “I’m sorry,” I say, rubbing her hand on my cheek. “I shouldn’t say these things to you, but I couldn’t help it. I’m not a professor when I’m with you, not even a decent man. I’m an animal, Elsie, and I’m weak. What I want to say is, my body likes yours a lot. When I’m with you, I want to touch you, and I want to do bad things to you. And that’s why I, I can’t tutor you anymore. Okay?”
She looks astonished for a moment. Tears well up in her eyes when she speaks, “I don’t understand. If you like me, then why can’t you see me? And what are the bad things you want to do to me?”
I open my mouth to explain, but I’m lost for words. These aren’t simple, algebra questions and I don’t know how to answer them. I sigh with frustration. “I can’t tell you.”
Chapter 4
Elsie
It’s all I can do to keep my tears from rolling down my cheeks.
I can’t believe it. I was looking forward to my lesson with Albert, and I like Algebra so much more than I did before. But now, he tells me he can’t see me anymore. The reason seems to be he likes me too much.
That really confuses me. If he hates me, I can understand it. But he likes me? What’s the problem?
“I’m not supposed to like you, Elsie,” Albert says with pain in his eyes.
“Why can’t you like me?” I ask. “Is it because I’m not good enough for you?”
