Frank informed my parents about our relationship before my dad was on his way to pick me up back in April. My mom yelled at him over the phone, accusing Frank of taking advantage of me, and calling him a pervert. My dad was so shocked he didn’t speak much at all. He wanted to take me back home right away, though, but I told him I wouldn’t leave Frank.

At the end of May, Frank proposed to me and drove me back to my parents’ home to formally ask their permission to marry me. It didn’t take much convincing because they had eyes to see how much we loved each other. We had a simple wedding the month following, inviting only our families and Frank’s close friends.

Frank is concentrating on his computer screen when I enter his study. I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss his temple. I stroke his pecs over his t-shirt and make him shiver. “Hi husband. Ready for some fun?” I whisper into his ear while nibbling his earlobe.

He chuckles. “Yes, naughty girl. Just a minute.”

He closes the computer programs and covers his laptop. “What’s your plan?”

“Can you take me to the beavers?” I ask him. “I want to see how they’re doing.”

“Sure,” Frank says, glancing at me with smoldering eyes. “Put on a bra first.”

I roll my eyes. He is so possessive. He ordered me a dozen bra online just days after I moved into his condo, saying wearing Nippies aren’t good for the shapes of my breasts.

Frank parks the boat near the colony where a large beaver family stays. The mom gave birth to a litter of five kits two months ago. They had four other babies from before, so now there are eleven family members.

The adults are fixing their lodge which seems to have been damaged by a recent storm. A few young beavers are helping their parents, while others are playing with their baby siblings.

“Aww!” I sigh. “What a blissful family life!” I say as I take pictures on my cell phone. “I want babies, Frank.”

Frank chuckles as he wraps his arm over my shoulders. “You will have them, sweetheart. Be patient.”

We’ve been together for almost five months and I’ve been receiving loads of his seed every day, but I’m still not pregnant. I wonder whether there’s something wrong with me, or him.

Just then, a young adult beaver climbs up a tree right next to our boat. If I reach out my hand I can touch him, but I don’t because I don’t want to scare him. He stops momentarily as he passes my height and looks down at me, wriggling his tail and shaking his butt as if saying hi.

“So cute!” I giggle and snap another photo. And then I hear a loud farting noise and before I can turn my head away, a stench hits my nostrils and I gag.

“Are you all right?” Frank asks, laughing.

“No I’m not,” I shout, fanning with my hand. “I feel sick!”

When he turns the boat around, the nausea intensifies, and I have to grab the Kleenex box as I fight my urge to throw up.

I press the tissue to my mouth until we’re far away from the beaver colony.

“Are you okay?” Frank asks again. “Is the beaver gas that powerful?”

“I don’t know.” I say, still feeling too sick to giggle. I can’t get the stench off my mind. What’s wrong with me?

And then it hits me. “Oh my God, Frank,” I say. “I might be pregnant.”

He jerks his head to look at me, and then he grins. “Are you sure?”

“I’m not. But my period has been … jeez… two weeks late!” I’ve been too occupied with my term paper to pay attention to my cycles. I noticed I was late last week, but I thought the stress changed my body hormones.

“We have to go to the drug store and get a pregnancy test kit right away,” Frank says enthusiastically.

Twenty minutes later, we are at the nearest Walgreen by the river, and ten minutes after that we’re at our bathroom.

With trembling hands, Frank opens the box and pulls out the stick, while I pee into the cup.

Following the instructions, he soaks the end of the stick into the cup for ten seconds, put it down and then we wait. We should probably go out and sit down, but we’re too excited to leave the bathroom. So we stand there, Frank holding me in his arms.

“Five minutes already,” Frank says after glancing his watch and then he reaches for the stick.

I take a deep breath as he checks.
