“How long have we known each other, Frank?” Penny asks, interrupting my thoughts.
I think quickly. “About five years?”
“That’s it?” she says, leaning toward me a bit coquettishly. “I feel like I’ve known you all my life.”
I stare at Penny. She’s a beautiful woman, especially at the moment. Her eyes are bright and cheeks flushed, probably because of the alcohol.
Penny and I are perfect for each other. She’s about two years younger than I and she’s a nice woman. She got a small fortune from her divorce settlement, but never stopped working. She was a waitress at a restaurant before the pandemic. She likes skiing and boating, just like me. She enjoys cooking, too. From the late night banging I heard through my bedroom wall in the past, she proves to be a vigorous woman in bed. Why didn’t I give her a chance? Why would I rather jerk myself off than having sex with this gorgeous woman?
I sip the remaining of the wine in my glass and glance at Megan, who’s glaring at Penny. I have the answers to my questions right away. Megan. She was the reason! After meeting Megan last August, I haven’t been interested in any other woman. Holy hell. The little vixen captivated me long before I realized.
Chapter 10
Megan
I go with Frank to the dinner, hoping he would stop being mad at me. It turns out to be a mistake, because all I get to see is Penny flirting with him. She calls himhoney, love, handsome, etc.,and keeps reminding him how long they’ve known each other, and how much he feels like family to her. I wouldn’t be surprised if she asked him to marry her in front of me. Frank doesn’t really play along, but he doesn’t stop her either. Rather, he seems to enjoy having her attention, or enjoy getting back at me.
I compose myself the best I can, pretending I enjoy the Thai food to-go even though it’s way too spicy for me.
I stay after dinner when the two of them drink, determined to be a third wheel and not to give Penny any chance to seduce Frank.
Finally, at about nine o’clock, Penny yawns. “Oh, Frank, thank you so much for your help.”
“Don’t mention it. It’s what neighbors are for. Thanks for the dinner, Penny,” Frank says as he gets up.
I spring to my feet and follow him to the door.
Before letting us out of her sight, Penny says, “We should get together oftener. I’m going nuts living by myself every day. It’s good to have company. Don’t you think?”
“Sure,” Frank says as we finally get out of her house.
We don’t speak a word to each other as we return to Frank’s unit.
Frank shuts the door and goes straight to his bedroom. Soon I hear water running and I know he’s showering.
I sit on the living room couch, biting my lip and hating myself. Why on earth did I flirt with Josh? Frank’s right, I am a slut!
As I’m moping, my phone rings. It’s my dad.
“Hi Dad!” I say, trying to sound cheerful.
“Megan, how’s my sweetie pie?”
My dad’s voice sounds so comforting that I forget my chagrin right away. “I’m fine, Dad.”
“How’s Frank? Is he home?”
“He’s showering,” I say.And he’s mad.
“Listen, sweetie, I fixed my car today.”
“You did?” I say, trying to sound excited. “That’s great.”
“Yep, with the help of our neighbor Mario. I’ll come pick you up tomorrow.”
So soon?“Oh, thanks! What time will you be here?”
“I don’t know. It takes ten hours’ drive, so I guess if I get out of our house at seven in the morning, I’ll be there at around five in the afternoon.”
