I quickly finish my task at hand and glance at the next item on my to-do list. What?Order men’s boxers size M.This is outrageous. I don’t remember it being listed on my job duties. But then again, neither was making coffee or correcting typos for my supervisor, at least not explicitly. I guess they are included in the “miscellaneous tasks to support the company.”
Just why am I still working here?
My vanity? Because although I’m doing no-brainer work, my job title is Business Administrator, sounds better than Server, right?
I’m not the first in my family to enter college, but the first to graduate. I should be proud of myself, but I’m not. I think of my cousin Leslie, who dropped out of college because of her babies. I’m not as lucky as her. I have to help out my mom and provide for my brother and sister. I can’t complain.
The moment my dad left us, I knew I was no longer a carefree girl. I was twelve, and I had to babysit my siblings while doing my homework. I loved school, and had wanted to become a rocket scientist, but I was also realistic. Business majors had better job prospects, so I decided to major in it during my freshman year. I worked hard on my degree, never had a second thought about my goal. Not even when I was pinching my thighs to stay awake late at night to study for exams.
But now, I’m not sure the years of hard work was worth it. I’m taking order from someone who doesn’t even know how to add and ordering underwear for a jerk who can’t keep his hands off his employees.
The sound of a door being thrown open violently startles me out of my thoughts. I whip my head around to look. Jenny storms out of Jason’s office. Her face is dark with anger. Her hair looks deranged, and the top buttons of her shirt are open. She doesn’t look at me, but dashes out of the office.
My mouth falls open at the sight. What the hell? What did Jason do to her?
I haven’t turned my attention back to the computer when Jason walks out of his office.
“Kayla,” he says to me with a smile, as if nothing has happened between Jenny and him.
“Yes, Mr. Jerkins?” I ask as calmly as I can, hiding my curiosity.
“Jason,” He corrects me. “Listen, do you have a moment? I would like to discuss something with you.”
“Sure,” I say and stand up, checking the time on the computer again. I hope it won’t take long. It’s four forty-five.
“Actually, wrap it up for today. We’ll have a drink at Marco’s.”
I hesitate. Marco’s is a bar a block away and I don’t like the idea of going out with him. “Why can’t we talk here?”
He smirks. “I’m hungry. I need to get something to eat.”
“But it’s almost five,” I say in a small voice.
“Do you have to be somewhere? Do you have an appointment?”
I bite my lip. He might’ve forgotten about my part-time job. “Yeah, I have another job at six,” I remind him.
He pauses. “Don’t worry, it won’t take long. I want to speak to you about your promotion,” he says.
Shit. I didn’t see it coming. “Promotion?”
“Yes,” he says. “It’s about time, don’t you think? Jenny is leaving soon. I think you’re perfect for her position.”
“Seriously?” My vanity gets the better of me and I can hardly stifle a smile. This is pathetic. I hate this man, and although I despise Jenny, too, taking over her job shouldn’t please me so much.
“So what do you think? You got twenty minutes?”
“Yeah, I guess,” I say... “Let me save the file first.”
Jason rests his hand on my shoulder as we walk toward the bar. I feel stiff but don’t want to be rude. I tell myself not to make a big deal because he’s like that with every female employee. But still, my cheeks are flushed. I don’t know what he’s going to discuss. Why do I have to come to the bar with him?
What does he expect me to do once I get promoted? What did he do to Jenny when they were alone in his office?
Oh Lord. No. Although I want to deny it, I pretty much guess what they did.
We sit at a table close to the bar. Jason orders us beer, some nachos, and a sandwich for himself. I glance at him across the table. Jason is not bad looking. In fact, he’s quite handsome. He has large brown eyes with long eyelashes. He’s thirty years old but looks boyish with the messy haircut.
The bartender brings us our drinks and the nachos soon. Jason swallows his beer while staring at me.
