“The Jenny Yoo? I told you to hold on to it. I wanted to pay for it!”
“But I didn’t want to miss the sale,” I say to her. “And not that expensive.”
I lie. It was a bit over my price range, but I liked the dress.
“Oh. Let me buy you the shoes, then.”
“I have the shoes, too.”
“Kayla, you’re no fun!” She pouts.
“Stop it, Ivy,” I say. “I’m not rich, but I can afford these things. Besides, I expect a sumptuous wedding banquet.”
She smiles. “You won’t be disappointed. Bring your family along!”
“Sure. Angela was thrilled when I told her about your engagement.” Ivy was a regular guest at my grandma’s house back in high school.
“Tell her I miss her Alfajores!”
“I’ll ask her to make some for your wedding.”
“That’ll be nice.”
We keep walking aimlessly on Powell Street until we reach the traffic light.
“So, where do you want to go next?” Ivy asks me.
I shrug. “I don’t need anything. Whatever you want.”
“In that case, let’s go to Victoria’s Secret,” she says with a grin. “I need some sexy underwear.”
“Sure.”
“You might want to get something, too, if you want to seduce my dad,” she whispers at me as we enter the lingerie store.
“Stop it.” My cheeks turn crimson, although I have the thought.
Lucky for us, everything is 20% off over the weekend, starting today. Within ten minutes Ivy gets an armful of skimpy lingerie of different colors and materials besides lacy bras and panties. I also find myself a sexy silk slip.
After having lunch at Sushirrito, we take the train back to Bay Bistro.
Chapter 16
Richard
It’s Saturday. Kayla’s taking her mom to the doctor’s office and won’t be here until two. I’ve gotten so used to her presence that I miss her as soon as I enter the restaurant. Ivy and Gavin returned to their vineyard last night after spending two days in the city. Thus, the restaurant feels extra empty. In the past two days, I had to be on my best behavior under the scrutiny of my shrewd daughter, who undoubtedly suspected my relationship with Kayla. Ivy would glance at me whenever I spoke to Kayla with excitement in her eyes, as if waiting for me to drop my mask. Shit. Why couldn’t she show a bit of disgust or disapproval instead? But then again, I’ve always underestimated my little girl. Well, she isn’t a little girl anymore, and certainly not mine any longer. In two weeks she’ll become Gavin’s wife officially. A mixture of emotions fills my heart as I go through the daily routines of opening the business.
The door chimes and I take a deep breath as I look up, getting ready to smile at the customer.
Although expected, I still cringe when I see the redhead enter the restaurant. Penny is here for her Saturday brunch.
“I’m taking off the day after Christmas,” Penny says before she even sits down. “I’ll stay there for two weeks.”
She’s informing me about her upcoming trip to Italy.
“Sounds good,” I say, not mentioning it’ll be wet and cold.
“I know,” she says with a smirk, her eyes searching mine as she speaks, waiting for me to say more and tempting me to go with her.
