Istoodinthemiddle of a room. A piano sat nestled beneath a balcony with sweeping staircases on either side. A door opened behind me, and a man with black hair to match his shirt and pants strode into the room. Tattoos covered every inch of his skin, from his neck down. His gaze was set on the floor while an inked finger pressed against his full lips.

I inhaled sharply, literally left speechless. He looked too good to be real.

He stopped, his gaze shifting until I stared into blue-green eyes that burned with hatred.

“Who are you? How did you get in here?”

“I don’t know,” I said pathetically, trying to remember entering this room. The answer danced in my mind, but refused to come close enough for me to grab it.

“You don’t know who you are?” He smiled. It was a cruel and mocking smile despite the flat tone of his voice.

“I’m Morrigan.” I extended my hand, offering it as a chance to start this interaction over.

His eyes narrowed to slits, and I slowly pulled my hand back as a prickling sensation started at the back of my neck.

“Everyone knows touching me is a death sentence,” the guy said, crossing his impressive arms over his chest. It pulled on the fabric of his shirt, showing me his body was just as mouthwatering beneath his clothes.

“Well, I didn’t know,” I huffed, wanting to understand why the universe finally allowed me to find the man of my dreams, only to have him hate my guts from the start. “Am I supposed to know who you are?”

“I’m Jax.” That was all he gave me, but he smiled like it was enough.

“Hi, Jax. It’s nice to meet you,” I said, hoping he would go with it.

He silently evaluated me, his hot gaze traveling up and down my body.

I fidgeted in place, not knowing how to look sexy like the other girls on campus. Instead, I crossed my arms over my chest, helping to push my puppies up.

He laughed, his gaze slowly finding its way to my lips. “You’re just a lost pet, aren’t you? Justice really needs to take better care of his infatuations.”

“I don’t know who that is,” I said, trying to search my mind. The name had felt familiar, stemming from the same part of my mind where the answer to how I had gotten into this room hid.

He took a step toward me.

My pulse picked up, and it felt like the only way I could breathe was through pulling shallow breaths. There was something apparently dangerous about him, and he had already mentioned that those who touched him wound up dead. My mind decided the best course of action was to remain entirely still while he stalked me.

He walked around me, and I could feel his evaluating gaze. I didn’t know if I wanted him to deem me worthy or decide I was uninteresting enough to pass on.

“Do you even know what kind of trouble you’ve found?”

“Clearly not,” I breathed.

I felt the hair on my neck pushed back over my shoulder. My fight-or-flight response chose neither as I stood as still as a statue.

“Do you like to play dangerous games, Morrigan?”

I felt his breath on my neck and goosebumps on my arms.

“Not usually,” I breathed before laughing.

“Yet here you are.”

My arms were pressed to my sides, held in place by his hands on my shoulders.

“I thought people who touch you end up dead,” I breathed. A low tremor had taken over my entire body as I tried not to move.

“I said it would be a dangerous game.”

I felt his tongue against my neck, sliding from the base to my ear. My body felt stuck in place, and I wasn’t sure if it was out of fear of touching him.
