“This isn’t what you promised,” Mor said, her tone full of unbridled hatred. “YOU SAID IT WOULD HEAL HIM!” she screamed at the ceiling.
She got to her feet, and Jax’s body slumped. His eyes were open, unseeing. Staring into my soul. I knew he was dead.
Gone.
Jasper reached out to put his hand on her shoulder, but it was deflected off a barrier.
She screamed, facing the empty hallway in front of her. The walls began to shake. The stones groaned and trembled while her scream continued, only tapering off once she ran out of air in her lungs. And then she collapsed.
Jasper reached forward, grabbing hold of her before she hit the ground. He turned toward me, cradling her between his arms.
I stepped forward, then my eyes shifted to Jax’s body, and I froze again. I looked back at Jasper, numb, but with an absolute knowledge that I couldn’t go any further.
Jasper’s eyes slid to Jax.
Jax’s body started to smolder, his skin turning the shade of stone. Veins of fire burned through him from the inside, cracking his skin apart. Pieces of him lifted into the air, floating above our heads before vanishing.
Jasper waited until the last embers floated away before hanging his head and pulling Mor closer to his chest. He started walking toward me.
“Can,” his tone was ragged and harsh, and he cleared his throat. “Can you get Justice?”
“Yeah,” I breathed, not recognizing the sound of my voice as I turned and sped over to scoop Justice into my arms before racing into the bedroom.
Cole hurried into the room after me, closing the door behind him with his tail.
Jasper laid Mor down on the bed, and I placed Justice beside her, leaving plenty of space between them.
“What the fuck happens now?” I breathed, turning to Jasper for any form of guidance.
“He said it would happen,” Jasper said, his voice sounding far away. “He always said. And it always felt like something in the distant future.” Jasper sat at the table, and a drink appeared for him to drain.
I sat across from him, folding my hands on the table. There wasn’t anything strong enough to numb me now that the pricking sensation had settled in. Like my whole body had fallen asleep and was waking up with a vengeance.
Cole padded over, flopping down at my feet and closing his eyes.
Jasper and I sat at the table in silence as the hours of the night ticked by.
Justice
Iopenedmyeyes.
I was lying in the middle of the bed. Turning my head, I saw the slumbering face of my Fox, but her expression was anything but soft.
She looked like she was in pain.
She was in pain.
I could feel it oozing from her like a toxic waste. It was thick and dark and nasty. It was the kind of pain that coats you, sticking to your soul long after you wash your hands of it. An angry, incessant wound that begged to be picked at rather than healed.
It was the kind of pain that would drive you mad, and my Fox was bathing in it.
At least she was still unconscious.
There was no way to unfuck this duck now that it had swum into our bathtub.
I saw Jace and Jasper sitting across from one another at the table. They weren’t speaking, just sitting.
I got up from the bed and padded over, taking my seat. I didn’t say a word.
