It looked like he was struggling to figure out which way to answer.

“I thought things were going well with where we stand. Or at least they were going well until Jace and I had sex. Everything is mixed up and shouldn’t be because what I have with you has nothing to do with him.”

“I can’t help how I feel, Morrigan,” he shouted. My full name sounded harsh coming from his lips.

“How do you feel then?” I shouted back, my hands falling from my hips into balls at my sides. “Because I’m not sure I know anymore.”

“How do I feel?” The words came out with as much venom as the poison in Justice’s veins. “I feel like I’ve never been needed in this group, to begin with. You. The pack. You were all waiting for the right part of my soul to show up, and now that he has, it leaves me without a chair at the table.”

I watched as he paced the floor slightly, but I stood my ground. If this is what it took to make Jax open up about everything he’s been keeping to himself, then so be it.

“But I’m too selfish to give you up,” he whispered, stepping forward suddenly as he weaved his fingers through my black hair. It perfectly matched his.

“I don’t want you to give me up,” I whispered, closing my eyes against the powerful emotions coming off both of us. They filled the room like skeins of silk, floating amidst a hurricane.

“I die.”

My eyes snapped open to look deep into his eyes. They looked like the ocean right before a storm. Images of his lifeless body piled up along the others flashed in my mind. I had hoped I was mainly past the residual flashbacks from the veil, but they flooded right back in at the mention of death. “What do you mean you die?”

If the emotions floating around the room were silk, they all turned black by the sheer amount of fear that circled us. I felt the fire living inside my veins rushing to the surface, ready to fight. To protect.

“Aggie was a young demon, didn’t even have her runes yet. I was older by a few centuries, but I hadn’t even found the pack yet. I didn’t socialize with the other princes because I spent so many years locked away from my powers. Whenever I was forced to attend a feast, I always sat next to Aggie.

“During one of the feasts, she reached over to grab her drink at the same time I reached out, and our hands collided. She grabbed me roughly, and I can still feel the terror that flooded me while I watched her eyes fog over. Then she started mumbling in the middle of the feast.” He paused to shake his head as if clearing away spiderwebs from his memories.

“The words that came out of her mouth were jumbled and didn’t make much sense. I should have paid better attention to what she said, but it was so fucking loud.” His eyes closed with pain. When he opened them again, they were solid black. “She said I would die.”

“Do you know when? Or how?” I asked, searching his face as I tried to imagine a world without him.

“No. And it doesn’t matter. When I die, you go insane, and the whole pack dies. I kill us all.”

I felt him pull away from me, my hands shooting up to his shoulders to hold him here. The flash of pain that crossed his face tore me apart on the inside, but he needed to hear this. No more running away.

“Jax. We could have a thousand years together, or we could have one. Demonlings don’t seem to have a long-life expectancy. But I refuse to take my dying breath, wishing I hadn’t wasted so much time away from you.”

In an instant, his mouth came crashing against mine as one of his tattooed hands gripped my throat. His tongue licked my parted lips. He smiled, and I saw his small sets of fangs peeking out.

“Even if I left now, you would still die when I do.” He muttered against my lips. Like he needed the reasoning.

“I don’t want to live in a universe you are not in.” I felt the vibration of my vocal cords against the grip of his palm as his hand squeezed with slow, steady pressure. My head started to feel light as I could pull less and less air in. The burn started in my lungs, and I felt a wet heat pool between my thighs.

He released the pressure, allowing me to gasp for air. My lungs continued to scream and ache for a moment before a healing relief washed through me too quickly.

“Take your clothes off,” he commanded, releasing me and putting some space between us.

I started with my pants, black leggings that hugged my curves. Hooking a finger on each side of my waist, I slowly pulled them down over my ass. I revealed a simple pair of underwear with flowers all over it.

“Flowers?” Jax asked with a raised eyebrow. His black eyes looked at me as if the beast was barely contained.

“In memory of all the faces buried there,” I said with a wink. My hands moved slowly, dragging my pants further down my thighs. I pulled the pants free and tossed them at Jax.

He caught them quickly with his power before tossing them into the corner next to my shoes.

I slid my hands up my bare thighs and over the soft material of my underwear. My finger toying with the elastic band as Jax’s eyes followed its path. There was evident hunger in his eyes, but his mastery of restraint was evident. I snapped the band before moving my hands up my stomach over the silky black material of my top. My hand skirted around my breast to my collarbone, where I started to run my finger across the low neckline. Teasing him. Tempting him to lose himself with me.

I could have combusted when Jax moved my bra to the side to expose my nipple at the bar earlier. The look he gave me might as well be a gallon of gasoline to pour over my overheated body.

Impatiently, I grabbed the bottom hem of my shirt, pulling it over my head and tossing it on the floor. I stood, wearing only a simple black bra and underwear with flowers. Yet under his gaze, I felt like I was wearing the most alluring lingerie. His gaze was dark and hot on me as his eyes roamed my body as if he had never seen me before this moment.
