"Yes, ma'am. I will be escorting you to work."
"Please don't call me ma'am; I'm Miss Keller to my students. You can call me Glory. Besides, you've been following my ass for months, no reason to be so formal."
"I'm sorry, but I have been instructed to address you as ma'am or Miss Keller."
"Fuck me," I mutter, rolling my eyes. "You should tell your boss to lighten up," I say as I make my way toward the elevator with Sasha following close behind.
"If I wish to keep my tongue, I will do as Mr. Volkov instructs," he says his face serious.
"Demetri wouldn't do that, would he?" I ask unbelieving.
Sasha gives me a look that says he is deadly serious, and I snap my mouth shut.
"Alright, Miss Keller it is."
I look Sasha up and down. "I'm sure the ladies would be disappointed if something happened to your tongue."
Sasha curses under his breath. I think I shouldn't have said that, but Demetri knows by now I have no filter. I can't help the shit that comes out of my mouth. When Sasha steps onto the elevator behind me, I shrug my shoulders, and he shakes his head.
When we step out of my apartment building and onto the sidewalk, I breathe in the warm fresh air. Today is the last day of school and summer is approaching. With school ending, I wonder what I'll do with my time off. My mind drifts to Demetri, and I find myself hoping it is spent with him. Maybe I should fly out to Polson and see Grace and my Godchildren. Shaking those thoughts away, I take in the sleek black car parked on the street in front of me. Sasha steps up to the back passenger door and opens it. Once I climb inside, I watch as he rounds the hood of the car. I don't miss the way his eyes scan everywhere and his alertness as he takes in our surroundings.
"Can we stop at the coffee shop a couple of blocks down from the school?" I ask Sasha after he climbs into the car. "I'm in desperate need…" My words get cut short when he passes me a white bag and a foam cup with the coffee shop logo on the side. I take the offered coffee and peek inside the bag to find a bagel and cream cheese. There is even a little pack of honey. "Do you also know what brand of tampons I use?" I ask jokingly.
"I can pick some up for you and drop them by your apartment later," Sasha answers in a perfectly calm tone.
"Jesus Christ. I was only kidding. I'll get my own damn tampons for crying out loud."
Sasha shrugs then proceeds to put the car in drive and pull out into traffic. Thirty minutes later, I'm settling in behind my desk at school as my students begin to trickle in. "Alright, kids. Come on and take your seat. The sooner we start, the quicker we can get out of here," I holler over their murmured chatter. Taking the stack of test papers from my desk, I hand them to each student sitting in the first desk at the front of each row. "Take one and pass the rest back. You all have one hour to complete your final exam."
An hour and a half later, the classroom is empty, and I have just finished clearing out my desk drawers. Just as I drop the stapler into the box sitting on top of my desk, I hear a knock on the door. Peaking over my shoulder, I see Mr. Learner striding toward me.
"How was your last day, Glory?" he asks.
Without giving him a second glance, I continue with my task of packing up my supplies. "Oh, you know. Same as any other day." I don't ask him how his day was, hoping he will leave. The man has gotten on my last nerve.
"Have you signed up to teach summer school?" Kevin continues.
"Nope," is my reply.
Without warning, I feel a hand on my hip and Kevin's voice too close for comfort as he comes to stand directly behind me. "Now that school has ended, how about I take you out. I know you were worried about starting anything because we worked together, but now there is no reason we can't see each other."
Turning around to face Kevin, I give him an annoyed look. "I haven't accepted your invitation to go out because I am not interested. It's not because we work together."
Kevin takes one step closer into my personal space as if he didn't get the fact that I have rejected his advance yet again. "Look, Glory…" Kevin goes to speak, but this time he's cut off when out of nowhere a red faced Demetri wraps his large hand around the scruff of Kevin's neck. I have never seen the pure animalistic look he is currently sporting; the veins on his forehead look like they are about to burst.
"I should cut your hands off for touching what's mine," Demetri snarls shoving Kevin against the whiteboard behind my desk.
"Hey. Take it easy man. We were talking," Kevin says, unable to hide the tremor in his voice. Because not only does Demetri tower over him, he also looks seconds away from committing murder. Kevin cuts his gaze to me; his eyes pleading for help.
"Do you know this guy, Glory?" I raise a brow at Kevin's question. One would think I'd be scared as to what Demetri might do, but I'm kind of curious to see how this plays out. With lightning quick movement, Demetri pulls his gun from the inside of his suit coat and presses it against my colleague's head. "Glory is not your concern. The only thing you need to know is she belongs to me. That means you don't look at her and you sure as fuck don't touch her. She does not exist to you," Demetri says his tone calm, yet something evil lies behind it. I cut my eyes to the door of the classroom to see Sasha standing guard with a bored look on his face.
"Alright, man! I'm sorry. Glory doesn't exist. I won't bother her again." Kevin pleads with Demetri to let him go.
Demetri holds his weapon against Kevin's temple a few seconds longer before he releases the hold on his neck, steps back and holsters his gun. Kevin doesn't hesitate to make a quick retreat out of the room. Demetri then turns his attention to me. He stares at me, waiting for my reaction.
I cock my head to the side and smile. "That was a bit extreme, don't you think?"
"No," Demetri says his face void of any expression.
