"Fuck. They shot the tires."
"Shit, man. Floor it. We have three motherfuckers in a car coming at us from behind," Sam yells just as more glass shatters. "Sofia, babe. Listen. " I can hear Sam but can't see him. "Is your phone in your pocket baby?"
I reach into my back pocket and grab my phone. "Yeah." The SUV swerves yet again, the piercing sound of metal scraping together echos around us when the car chasing us rams into the side of our vehicle.
"I need you to call the guys." Lifting my head, I watch Sam lean out of the broken window with his gun in his hands as he fires off three shots before pulling himself back inside. He looks my way. "Head down, Sofia."
Focusing, I tuck my head down past the edge of the seat and pull up my contacts. Logan's number is the first one I come to, so I swipe the screen and put the phone to my ear. "Talk to me," Logan answers.
"Logan, someone is shooting at us," the urgency in my voice catches his attention.
"Tell me where you're at, sweetheart."
More shots rings out. Hearing a bullet hit the truck causes me to flinch. "Um, we're on the highway. I'm not sure how close we are to the clubhouse. Logan, they shot out our tires."
"Shit." I hear movement and Logan exchanging words with someone. "Listen to me. Keep Luna and Emma calm and do exactly what Sam and Grey tell you. They will keep you safe. We're on our way." My phone is knocked from my hand when the car sideswipes us again causing it to slide under the seat.
"Sam, I'm not sure how much further we can go. We're about to lose rubber. As soon as we leave the pavement and hit the dirt road leading to the compound they will dig into the ground, and we won't get much further!" Grey yells.
Luna, Emma, and I continue to huddle close together as we hunker down. Time slows to a crawl. "Hold on!" Grey calls out as the SUV takes a hard-left turn. Paved road turns to the dirt, and I hold my breath knowing we are close to the clubhouse.
Chapter seventeen
Sam
Acloud of dust engulfs the SUV as we come to a stop on the dirt road down from the clubhouse. The only sounds I hear is the the pounding of my own heart and the soft cries coming from Luna, Emma and Sofia. Grey and I both keep our heads down not knowing if we've been followed or even surrounded. Sofia was on the phone with one of the guys, so my hope is they're on their way. I take a chance and lift my head enough to see if I can get a look at our surroundings.
"You see anyone?" Grey questions and I shake my head.
"Not a fuckin' thing."
"Shit," he mutters.
Just then the rumble of several Harleys fills the air. Not knowing if it's Savage Outlaw or Kings I stay vigilant.
"Get ready," Grey warns then we both fling open our doors, crouch down on the ground and take aim. I hear the bikes getting closer the same moment the dust cloud around us begins to settle. Through the thick fog, I make out Jake, Logan and Gabriel's forms as they climb off their bikes and run in our direction. Grey and I both sigh in relief.
"We're okay!" I call out then immediately check on Sofia. Ripping the back door of the SUV open, my girl throws herself into my arms.
"What the hell happened!" Jake bellows as he makes his way over to us. I watch as he takes in Sofia's appearance as well as Luna and Emma who is being comforted by Grey.
I shake my head. "We were ambushed. Motherfuckers came out of nowhere and started shootin' at us," I explain. "The moment we turned onto the dirt road they tucked tail and ran."
"Son of a bitch!" he roars. "Alright, men. Sam, Grey, I want you two to take the girls down to the clubhouse." Jake looks to Logan and Gabriel. "Call the brothers. Tell them to get the women and children here now, and you two do the same. I'm going to get Grace then pick Remi up from school. We're on lockdown. Let's move." With the orders made we all take action and do as we're told.
An hour later the clubhouse is a full-on frenzy. Sofia is held up in Luna's room trying to keep her calm. Emma jumps in to help Raine and Ember with the children while the other women scramble to organize.
"Prospect!" Logan shouts from across the main room of the clubhouse. "I need you to go to the storage room downstairs next to the basement and bring up the cots. Bella and the old ladies want the kids to bunk in the playroom."
"You got it." Just as I'm about to walk off Jake stops me. "Ember and Raine will help ya. They're going to stay with the kids. We have company rollin' in, and they have agreed to give up their rooms for our guests."
"What guests?" Logan asks walking up behind Jake, but I don't stick around to find out the answer. When I get to the playroom, I can't help but smile at all the kids. I spot Alba sitting on a beanbag chair reading a book to her son.
"Hey, little momma."
She smiles. "Hey."
Crouching down to eye level, I hold my fist out to little Gabe, and he gives it a bump. "Hey, big man." He smiles back but doesn't say anything. Gabe is sweet like his momma but is a boy of few words like his father.
