Making a sudden move, her father reaches for the inside of his suit jacket. On instinct I pull my weapon from the inside of my cut, "Don't you fuckin' move another inch," I warn him. Visibly gulping as he stares down the barrel I have pointed at his face, I reach inside his coat only to retrieve a phone. Dumb son of a bitch almost got himself killed making a move like that in a room full of bikers. "Plannin' on callin' the cops?" I ask lowering mygun.
"You're on my property," he crosses his arms trying his best not to show how nervous he is, but the beads of sweat forming on his brow and upper lip say different. I'd say he's about ready to shit his pants not knowing what will happen next. As much as I want to fuck with him a little I decide against it. I need them to think they have the upper hand with Mila, for now. The less fight, the less suspecting they will be when the storm rollsin.
"She's gonna get what she wants and then we'll be on our way," I informthem.
"She can't have anything that belongs to my mother. Not one thing. She can only take what belongs to her and that child of hers," her mother speaks up in a disgusted tone. My blood boils at the way she saysthat child. I have to keep telling myself now is not thetime.
"She never meant anything to you. You have no rightto-"
I pivot, and face Mila, interrupting her mid rant and grab her face in my hands, "Go get what you need for you and Ava," I say, giving her a look urging her to trust me. Seeming to understand what I need from her, she steps around me. Her along with Bella, Logan, and Austin walk towards the hallway and disappear into a room. "I'm sure you don’t mind giving them some time to gather clothes and such, so go ahead and take a seat. As soon as my brothers have the truck loaded. We'll leave," I tellthem.
For the better part of thirty minutes the guys load the back of Austin's truck. Without looking back, we leave her parents speechless in the living room and I head home with Mila on the back of mybike.
The guys all stuck around and unloaded the truck getting everything inside before heading out, but not before I thanked them for having my back today. Walking up to Mila I wrap my arms around her waist and rest my chin on her head and stand staring out the large windows facing the town skyline with her. "Come sit down on the couch. I need to talk toyou."
Dropping my hand, I take hers and we walk to the couch. As soon as my ass hits the cushion Mila turns to face me. "I'm sorry I'm causing so muchtrouble."
"Babe, none of this is your fault. We don’t get to choose who we're born to. My dad was a great fuckin' man, but my mom… let's just say she was no mother of the year." I tell her. I'm surprised I said anything about my mom. I never talk about her to anyone. "Listen, I dug around in your parent's past, and their present. I'm talking everything. Babe, they are flat ass broke. Lots of bad investmentsmostly."
Shifting her body to face me, she pulls her legs up on the couch and crosses them, "Broke? I don’t see how they can be broke. Reid, my parents have always had money." She tellsme.
"They're also being investigated on embezzlement and fraud, Kitten. They've stolen money from a shit ton of their clients over the past fifteenyears."
Fidgeting, Mila gets off the couch and starts pacing the floor. I sit quiet for a couple minutes giving her some time before dumping more onher.
Still pacing she makes the statement, "There's more, isn’t there? I've always know my parents were rotten apples, but that doesn’t explain why suddenly they want to cause havoc in mine and Grams livesnow."
Running my hands through my hair I sigh. I'm about to drop the motherload of news on her. "They're after your grandmother'smoney."
Her pacing stops, and her face loses all expression, "What money? Grams has been living off widow's benefits for years now," she sits back down this time on the arm of the couch next tome.
"Your grandfather made some investments that started to pay off after his death, babe. And it's still drawing interest. Your Grams was beneficiary to that money. She's had over two million dollars sitting in a bank account she may have never known about or she’s forgotten. Unfortunately, I believe your parents found out," Iexplain.
Staring blankly, Mila says nothing. I wrap an arm around her waist and pull her into my lap. A couple tears fall from her beautiful face. "Kitten, your grams has a will. In the event she passes everything she owns goes to you and Ava. Everything," I finish tellingher.
"And that’s why my parents want me out of the picture," she pieces it all together. With nothing more to do I hold her hoping it's enough to comfort her. We sit in silence for I don’t know how long, but long enough to watch the evening sun start to creep across the hardwoodfloors.
"What's the plan. I have the court hearing tomorrow. How will I prove all this to the judge?" she asks with worry anddefeat.
"I need you to give that lawyer friend of yours a call. I have a plan, but I need his help," I inform her. The chances of him helping are a long shot, but it's one we need to take. I don’t need my name associated with anything I'll be handing over. Not just for my sake, but the club's aswell.
"Now?" Mila asks after grabbing a hold of myhand.
"Now, Kitten. What I have planned needs to happen tomorrow, so we have to act fast." Without hesitation she gets up and retrieves her phone. I listen to her speak with him. She doesn’t go into detail only that she could use his help pertaining to court tomorrow. After ending the call, she slips her phone into the back pocket of her jeans. "He has time for usnow."
That was all I needed tohear.
It being the weekend, we make our way towards his house. We took Mila's car knowing we'd be swinging by Alba's on the way home to pick up Ava. I glance over at Mila. She's been silent for the whole ride. I'm sure she is wrapping her head around the information overload I dumped on her at home. I reach over and place my hand on her thigh giving it a light squeeze, "You okay?" Pulling up to the address she gave me I cut off the engine and wait for her to answer me, but her spaced out look tells me she didn’t hear a word I said. "Kitten," I speak a little louder with a firmer tone. She turns her head and her weary eyes connect with mine, "I'm sorry. What did yousay?"
Shit, I hate seeing her drowning in all this bullshit. "You okay?" I ask heragain.
"Yeah. It’s a lot to process, but I'm good. More tired than anything," shebreathes.
"You ready to go in?" I motion with my head towards River's house. Nodding her answer, she exits the car and we make our way up to the front door. After rapping my knuckles few times, the door swings open with River standing on the other side. His eyes land on Mila, briefly causing my hand to clench at my side. "Come in," he says stepping to theside.
As soon as we step in fully a little redheaded girl comes skipping towardsus,
"Ava!" shesqueals.
