Ellie
“Tell me everything!”Bri practically cheered as she stepped over the threshold, bumping me out of the way.
“Sure, come on in.”
“Ellie!” she growled, plopping herself on my couch, kicking off her shoes, and tucking her legs underneath her, ready for a good gossip. Too bad this time I was the topic. But this was Bri, and I told her everything. Top to toe.
When I looked over at Bri, her mouth was hanging open, and it took her a moment to blink. I snapped my fingers in front of her face, and her body jerked. “Stop it,” she said, batting my hands away from her face.
“Well?”
“Under normal circumstances, I’d think breaking into your house was a bit over the top, but…”
When she paused a bit longer than she needed to, I snapped, “But what?”
“It’s hot as fuck, Ellie.”
“It’s fucking crazy,” I responded back.
“I’ve been asking around about him.” This perked me up, and I leaned in a bit as she continued. “I guess he’s gone for several months at a time working.”
“What do you think he does?”
“I’ve been trying to figure that out, but everyone is zipped up tight. Judging from the other night, some kind of Rambo/mercenary/bounty hunter/badass fighter thing.”
“All that?”
She shrugged. “I mean, he found us and whisked us away like some badass superhero. He was just missing the cape.”
“Hero?” I shook my head. “He almost choked Baker to death.”
“Good.” My eyes widened as she remained steadfast. “What? He’s a dick. Only comes around to get a piece of ass, then he goes off to whatever he has back home.”
“He has someone?”
Bri rolled her eyes. “Come on. You know he does.”
I searched my memory banks, but we'd never really talked about his life at home. We just rolled with it. He didn’t wear a ring, and I hoped like hell he didn’t take it off to come to see me. That would seriously piss me off. I’d made a lot of mistakes in my life, but sleeping with someone else’s man was a no-go for me. Now I couldn’t shake the way I felt. In my head, I began scrutinizing every bit of time we spent together.
“Jesus,” I said, looking up at the ceiling, my mind reeling from this epiphany.
“But you don’t have to worry about Baker anymore. Killian apparently told him what the deal was.”
“Which is…” she led on.
“He called me his woman. I don’t even know the man.”
“You know his body,” she said with a smirk like a proud peacock. She had no idea the man should be proud of what he could do with his body.
“Yeah. That’s for damn sure.”
The back door to the house slammed open. Everything happened so fast, but in slow motion at the same time. I jumped up, seeing a man with short-cropped hair, all black clothes, and a gun in his hand stalking toward us. “Bri!” I cried out as the man ordered to us both, “Get down!”
One second I was standing; the next I was on the ground because my living room blew up in a hail of what I assumed to be gunfire. The man from the back door tackled Bri and me, covering us as glass shattered all around. Drywall dust, picture frames, and everything in between was being destroyed. Cushion filling flew in the air like cotton candy. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t think. This was insane.
The sound was so loud I covered my ears and shut my eyes, willing it all to go away. When that didn’t work, I looked for an escape route, but I didn’t have to find one.
The man on top of me yelled, “You two, crawl low but fast. Do not go in a straight line. Go into the second bedroom closet, and do not come out until I get you.”
