He reached behind him, going for his gun, until he saw a black SUV speeding toward him and Sofia. “Fuck—dad in the car now!” Dom shouted as he reached for Sofia and pushed her back into the airport.
As soon as they were past the doors, the SUV crashed inside after them, causing Dom to fall on top of Sofia, trying to get her out of harm’s way. He fell right in between her legs, and he didn’t want to notice how right this still felt after all this time. He pushed the thoughts his cock was trying to conjure up out of his mind and quickly got off of Sofia, pulling her to her feet with him.
Dom did a quick scan. “Move,” he snapped out to Sofia as he pulled her into a jog next to him heading to find some coverage behind the tarp that hung blocking the construction going on at the airport. He hunkered down as the first sounds of gunshots filtered the air around them.
He pulled his gun from his waistband. “I don’t suppose you have another one handy?” Sofia questioned, seeming more annoyed by the circumstances they were in than worried or scared.
Dom shook his head. “Not one that’s registered, and it’s in the car anyway. Besides, the way this airport is swarming with cops and the National Guard, I’m sure this will get wrapped up rather—”
A bullet whizzed by Dom’s head and he ducked. “Son of…” He reached for Sofia, pushing her further onto the floor. He peeked his head around the tarp and noticed six gunmen closing in on where they were hiding out.
Where the fuck was the police when you needed them?
Sofia tapped his shoulder, and he turned to see the crawl space she found that would hopefully lead to outside. From here it didn’t look like he was going to fit, but he urged her to hightail it over there. If only one of them had a chance at escaping, it needed to be her. If his father didn’t get hurt in this ordeal, he could help Sofia do what she came here to do.
Dom heard the sirens and the sounds of dogs barking getting closer. “Yo, leave the bitch. Let’s go,” he heard one of the men yell.
“We had orders!” he heard another one snap.
“We can’t carry them out if we’re in a shootout with the cops. Let’s go.”
Dom heard the sound of car doors slamming before the SUV peeled out of the airport. He popped his head around the tarp, hoping to get a look at the license plate but only caught the last two letters. Trying to find who owned it was going to be like finding a needle in a haystack, and that’s assuming the car wasn’t stolen.
Sofia came out and stepped around him, looking over the damage in the airport. He waited to see how she would react to seeing the lifeless bodies on the floor. This was a normal occurrence for him, being born and baptized by the life—with Sofia, he wasn’t sure what she was accustomed too.
Sofia’s icy gaze landed on him. “Weren’t you instructed to make sure no one knew I was coming home?” Her tone damn near cut him in half, and he couldn’t help his smirk. She still had that same fire only now it was morphed behind the power she held.
Dom nodded. “You used the fake ID to board the plane?”
Sofia scoffed, her eyes turning into tiny slits that he was sure had her subordinates pissing in their pants. The only thing it did for him was turn him on because he remembered exactly what it felt like to have that fire burning beneath him.
“I should be insulted that you think I’d just stroll through the gates with my real ID. Your government wouldn’t let me come home to bury my father, why would I give them more of an excuse to keep me in Colombia?” Her tone was bored and even, but he could hear the underlying power behind her words. If he had been anyone else, he had no doubt she would have handed him his ass on a nice shiny plate.
She nodded her head at the mess of the airport. “To whom do we owe this welcome party, and is there a reason we’re still sitting here waiting for the cops to show?”
There was only one person who could have gotten the information he thought he secured; Vinny “Sticky fucking Fingers” Russo. Also known as the asshole who took over the Barbati organization after Antonio was killed. He’d have the most to lose with Sofia coming back. Anyone who was loyal to her father would pick her over Vinny in a heartbeat.
“Probably the same person I believe killed your father.” He looked her over, gauging her reaction. They hadn’t talked much about her father’s death. There hadn’t been time to, and this was probably the worst time to bring up his suspicions, but he needed her as prepared as he could get her for what she was walking into.
She arched an eyebrow in his direction and pressed her lips together. “Are we staying or going?” Not the response he thought she was going to give him.
Dom had to give her credit. Aside from the few moments outside, she kept what she was feeling and thinking locked tight. If he didn’t know her as well as he did, he’d think she didn’t have a care in the world.
He shrugged. “Your call. There’s cameras everywhere. They’re going to know we were here and they’re eventually going to get wind of you being home. Though…” he waved his hands around the airport, “think keeping you a secret is a moot point now.”
He heard the cops rush into the area they were still standing in and immediately put the safety back on his gun and dropped it to his feet with his hands up. “Guess we’re staying.” He smirked as the cops barked their commands to get on the ground. So much for an uneventful homecoming.
VINNYRUSSO SAT AT Atable in Casa Nonna restaurant waiting for his meeting with Louie Bruno. Louie was an old timer and had been around longer than Vinny had. This man had amassed a lot of connections in his time, connections Vinny wanted to help secure his place as the head of the Barbati organization.
His cell phone rang and he quickly answered it. “Is it done?” he questioned, hopeful that his new problem wouldn’t be an issue any longer.
“Ran into trouble. Your enforcer was with her.” Vinny cursed under his breath.
He hadn’t been sure who was going to pick her up at the airport or if she was going to wander the streets of New York unguarded. He wasn’t able to find out any information aside from when she was coming home. He’d taken a chance trying to take her out, and now he was sure Dom would have figured out who was behind the attack.
“They went back to his house. Do you want us to grab her there?” His goon was talking to him, but he didn’t hear much of it.
“Leave it alone; we will handle it when I’m done here.” He hung up, pinching the bridge of his nose. His eagerness to snuff out any threats against him made him sloppy. Dom was going to be on her like a shadow now, and getting to her before they got to him was going to prove almost impossible.
