Three on the left.

She held her breath and turned just enough so she could fire her gun—three quick shots and she was back behind the table. She heard a hiss and a grunt, but bullets were still flying.

Fuck. I missed.

Sofia picked up the mirror again.

One on the left. Good I didn’t miss after all.

She turned the mirror a fraction to the right.

Another four.

One went down—make that three now.

Sofia didn’t see Vinny among those who were still standing. She didn’t know if her shot hit the little shit, but he had to have run out of here like the coward he was. She couldn’t wait till she got out of here and got her hands on him. Killing him outright now seemed too easy, she wanted to make him hurt.

Sofia heard a can hit the floor and quickly picked her shirt up over her face. “Either the cops are here or we just went from a shitty situation to full on fucked.”

“Drop the guns now!” The orders were barked as what sounded like a stampede of people busted through the casino.

Sofia dropped the guns and sat with her hands up while she looked at Dom in concern. He was looking a little pale, and his breathing had slowed down a bit. “You good?”

Dom gave her a weak smile. “Flesh wound. I’ll be aight.”

The cops rounded on them, shouting orders to put their hands up and to get on the ground. They did as they were told and were cuffed quickly. They were hauled up to their feet and Sofia knew this was going to be a long rest of the night.

IT WAS TEN IN THEmorning by the time Sofia pulled up to the front of Dom’s house. His father was waiting for them in front and helped Dom out of the car. For a guy who was blind, Sofia was surprised how easily the man got around.

Sofia wanted nothing more than to hop in a hot shower and sleep, but thanks to last night’s theatrics, she couldn’t do any of that. She spent half the night trying to keep herself alive, and the other half trying to plead her case to the cops.

Thanks to Carter, their lawyer had been able to help her and everyone else out, and they were able to go home. She had to give it to the Unhinged Brothers, they came through without second-guessing anything. They protected her and got her and Dom out of lock up. They even volunteered to run a small errand for her.

“You both know I’m fine, right?” Dom grumbled from the passenger side. He’d been clipped by a bullet that was meant for her and only needed a few stitches. The wound wasn’t serious, but every time Sofia saw the blood stain on his shirt, it made her want to kill someone for hurting him, and that made her mood sour.

She spent half the night wanting Dom to remember his place wasn’t to be her boyfriend when they were out at these meetings. But as soon as Gianna flashed a smile in his direction, she wanted to rip her head off, and when he got shot, it made her want to go on a killing spree. He was the only person who could touch her without it skeeving her out, and while she anticipated there being an attraction between them, she never expected the same feelings she had for him when she was sixteen to have emerged.

They walked into the house. His father left them alone as they headed upstairs to his room. He could feel the tension radiating off of Sofia, and all he wanted to do was comfort her. He knew she had to be exhausted and overwhelmed. Three gunfights and two stops to the police station had a way of taking its toll on a person. No matter how unfeeling Sofia might have believed herself to be, Dom could see the little breaks starting to peek through the worn out wall she kept up.

“You want to take a shower in here? I can go to the guest bathroom,” Sofia asked, but she was already grabbing her duffle bag and making her way toward his bedroom door.

He grabbed her arm, hauling her into his body. The need to feel her against his skin suddenly overwhelmed him. He pried her hands off of her duffle bag and wrapped his arms around her waist. She buried her face in his shoulder, and he squeezed her tighter.

They stayed like that for what seemed like forever until his phone rang, breaking up whatever was going on between them. Sofia started to pull herself away, but Dom kept a firm grip on her, keeping her close.

“Talk to me.” Dom picked up without looking at the caller ID, his eyes never wanting to stop looking at the girl he’d fallen in love with so long ago and the woman she had to become in his absence.

“I didn’t think they let you out,” Otto chuckled on the line.

“And you called anyway?”

“Yeah, to let you know my crew will be at the first meeting. Gianna and I will be at the second meeting.”

“Good. You’re in then?” Dom questioned as he watched a small smile splay across Sofia’s face.

“As long as Gia and Nat stay safe, you both will have mine and my crew’s loyalty. See you at two.”

He hung up the phone and tossed it on his bed so he could cup Sofia’s face. He pulled her lips towards his and kissed her like it was the first time he had the pleasure of tasting her. Her lips still fit against his, and the way she wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into her was still the same. Time and distances had no power over what they craved from one another.
