Never again. Not when everything I wanted is this close to my grasp.
ChapterThirty-Nine
Owen
“With all due respect, this isn’t your concern anymore.”
“Indulge me.”
I hold onto the sigh. Ever since my father abdicated his position, he has no business being in ours.
“Archer is Archer. He pulled her in, and she isn’t going anywhere.”
“I’ve heard otherwise.”
“From whom?” I snap.
“You know better than to ask me that.” His voice is tinged with amusement.
“Bailey has been initiated, and she is with us.”
“Good. I don’t want anything to screw this up.”
“It won’t.”
“I don’t need to remind you that she is a pureblood elite. She will ensure that yours and Archer’s legacy will be set in stone forever.”
“I know,” I grit out.
“Keep him on track. You know he gets bored.”
“Not with her. I’ve never seen him so…”
“So what?” Suspicion fills those words.
“In love.”
Silence.
“Make sure it stays that way. She won’t stand for a wandering dick.”
I want to ask how he knows that, but refrain. I don’t really want to know. “You don’t have anything to worry about.” The words are coming, but I’m annoyed that I have to play piggy in the middle. Again. I’m not my brother’s keeper, and yet, here I am, once again thrust into ‘keeping him in line’. Like he needs any incentive. He is as obsessed with Bailey as I am, which is saying something. But Dad and Archer are too much alike. They clash, so it’s up to me, the mild one, to smooth things out. It is a role I was handed when I was far too young to understand what was required of me. And even now, it seems I will always be the mediator between the two.
“I need to go. We are taking Bailey to Court tonight.”
“Good, that’s good.”
He hangs up, and I roll my eyes. None of this should matter to him anymore, but that’s something we are forbidden to talk about.
I replace the office phone and look up as there is a knock on the door.
“Yes?”
It opens, and Bailey pokes her head around the corner. “Can I talk to you for a minute?”
I nod, standing up, immediately concerned. Something is wrong.
She comes in and closes the door quietly, folding her arms.
