“Money.”
“Ugh!” I spit out, disgusted. “This whole thing is…”
I struggle to come up with a suitable word, because the only one that springs to mind is…exciting. It’s the most thrilling thing to have happened to me in my whole life. All of this adventure and subterfuge, backstabbing and betrayal. My heart is racing, my blood pounding through my veins. I’ve never felt so alive, and yet it’s all in the name of trying to take down my father. What kind of daughter does that make me?
Not a very good one.
“I want to know who you are really after,” I state, leaning forward again. “Who, Nico? Who is soooo important that you are going to send my father to prison in order to get?”
He turns his head to face me. Our mouths are millimetres apart. That mouth that was sucking my clit only a couple of days ago belongs to a big, fat liar.
A big, fat liar with a big fat cock, that this omega suddenly wants to ride more than anything. I find him even sexier now, despite the threat he holds over my family.
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” he murmurs, turning his head back so he can see the road.
“Cain? Is it Cain?” I chatter on. “I bet it is, isn’t it? I bet he is a big crim and you’re waiting for the chance to take him down. I’ll help with that. You don’t need my dad.”
“It’s not Cain,” he says patiently.
“Then who?” I bellow. “You can’t give me half a story, for fuck’s sake.”
He chuckles. “You are so impatient, aren’t you, princess?”
“Ugh. Don’t call me that. It’s Sophia to you.Ms Quinn, even.”
“Never mind all of that for now. The threat to you today was Atlas Philips. I need to get you back to the compound where you will be safe. You were in very dangerous waters earlier, being alone with him. Did he hurt you at all?”
I shake my head, curious about him. “Did you know he’s Cain’s brother?”
“Yes, I knew.”
Okay, well, duh, Sugar. If he’s seen them both, then he knows they’re twins, you daft cow.
“Humph. Can you at least tell me whathewants with my dad?”
“Yes, I can tell you that. Your father is the head of the London mafia, Sophia. He is a powerful and deadly man. He ran over Atlas’s dad’s gang, incorporating them into his territory, even though it was technically outside his patch. There was bad blood, and Atlas’s dad was killed….”
“So, Cain’s dad?”
He shakes his head. “Adopted dad.”
“Oh.” Note to self: Intriguing, bigger story there to learn.
“Atlas is on the hunt for revenge, and he is going to use you and anyone else he can to get it.”
I chew the inside of my lip and glance over at the safety deposit box on the seat next to me. I reach out and pick it up, lifting the lid cautiously. I pull the gun out and place it on the seat next to me, just in case. Then lift the pearls out and put them on, seeing as that is what I went for in the first place.
“Wait, was this a coincidence then? I didn’t decide to go to the bank until earlier.”
“Yes.”
Wow. I have the worst luck. I go back to the box and pick through the remains of the items. It’s mostly just jewellery, but something catches my eye that I haven’t seen before. I certainly didn’t put it in here.
Frowning, I reach for it, and then grunt when a skid of tyres, breaks through my thoughts and a car that jumped a red light, slams into the side of the van, sending us spinning off the road and up the curb. The contents of the box fly off in all directions as I scream, and my head hits the window as we jolt to a stop halfway up the pavement and facing the other way. I go dizzy, and then my eyes close as I hear someone shouting my name.
