Without hesitation, he complied. After he shut the door, he closed his eyes.

“Hold out your hands. Together.”

He did so.

Gently, I placed the figurine on his hand. “Okay, you can open them.”

He blinked. First he met my gaze, and offered me a beautiful smile, then he looked down at the figurine. He blinked again. “Is this…?”

“Yeah. Do you like it?”

“I know I say this all the time, but I think this is some of your best work.” He squinted. “That’s us.”

“Yep.”

“And Zeus.”

“Of course.”

“And Scrappy.”

Scrappy was the abandoned cat we’d taken in. She’d barely survived, and shescrappedwith Zeus every chance she got—when she wasn’t curled under his front paw.

“Yeah. Our…family…” I waited.

Johnson’s gaze flew to mine. He continued to hold the figurine in one hand while he hooked the ring in his pinkie. “This is mine?”

I shook my head. “No, that’s mine. It’s bigger than yours.” I pointed to the other ring.

“So…we’re getting married?”

“Uh…yes…?” Maybe this wasn’t such a great idea.

Slowly, Johnson moved to my worktable. He gently laid the figurine on top. Then he snagged the other ring. He handed it to me. “Let’s do this at the same time.”

“Shouldn’t we, you know, be in front of a minister or something?”

He nodded. “We can wait. Or we can do this and be fiancés.”

“Oh.” My eyes widened. “I like the sound of that.”

“And we can take it slow. How about a Christmas wedding? My parents promised to visit this year.”

I really loved Johnson’s parents. They’d accepted me on day one and treated me like I was their son. That thought filled me with joy. “Yes, please.”

We slid the rings on each other’s finger.

“This is forever, right?” I met his gaze.

He snagged the back of my neck and pulled me close. He pressed his forehead to mine. “Count on it.” Then he pressed a kiss to my lips.

Zeus woofed.

Everything was right in the world.
